A Study on Water Images of Ki Hyung-do's Poetry

The purpose of this study is to analyze water images and examine their trends shown in 『Complete Collection of Ki Hyung-do』. Though he ended his life at an early age of 29, Ki Hyung-do is being evaluated as one of the major poets of 1980s and received profound interested after 1990s with so-called 'Ki Hyung-do phenomenon'.
This study examined discussions given by existing studies to focus on water images that steadily appear in the poetry of Ki Hyung-do and to find out what kind of role water images take on in his works. In addition, using the properties of water shown in diverse shapes, Ki Hyung-do's recognition on the reality and future consciousness from regression of water image were analyzed through Bachelard's theory on material images.
The poet is controlled by one favorite image, one primitive emotion, or one fundamentally fancy temperament. Therefore, according to Bachelard, in order to understand the world of in-depth imagination of an individual on belief, passion, ideology, or thoughts, the world must be examined using a property of the matter that controls it. That is, a poetic image can be said to taken on a matter.
The matter that controls Ki Hyung-do in his poetry is water, and water images exposed in his works become an important tool for the readers to take a glance at the consciousness of the poet. This study paid attention to the fact that formation background of water images is related to the poet's memory on his childhood, and appearance of such water images in diverse shapes is seen as a means to show the poet's recognition on the reality after he became an adult. In addition, the author of this study looked into past-oriented consciousness of the poet through regression phenomenon of water images.
The first, water images mostly reflected Ki Hyung-do's childhood and family history, including his father, mother and feelings about the deceased older sister. Though he established a negative view of the world himself through gloomy family history, the author examined faint traces of hope that the poet refused to give up.
The second Ki Hyung-do's recognition on the reality was examined through characteristics of water images shown in various shapes. Changes in water images of Ki Hyung-do's poetry can be classified according to solid, gas, and liquid states. Memory of the past bound by snow and ice is traced in the clouds to makes the speaker seem rich, while existing as an uneasy mother-body of rain that melts down the image of death.
The last, the poet's consciousness was found to be inclined towards his childhood through cast back to regression phenomenon, and isolated and hopeless future of the poet was studied based on such past-oriented consciousness.
This study tried to approach closer to internal meanings of works and the inner world of the poet by examining what kind of role water images, repetitively shown in Ki Hyung-do's poetry, performed. Water images had been selected by Ki Hyung-do to be used as a means to expose his experience, emotion and even his consciousness about the past, present and future.
