The purpose of this study was to verify the mediating effects of mindfulness and self-criticism in the relation between perfectionism and depression using structural equational modeling.
The presumption of this study is that the two mediators, mindfulness and self-criticism may serve as vulnerable factors for depression and perfectionism, especially evaluate concerns perfectionism. The study follows through on this assumption in its development of two theoretical models explaining the depression. In the first model, each supported vulnerable factor mediator independently between mindfulness and self-criticism, so that two factors may be viewed as being linearly arranged. In the second model, a self-criticism is taken to have mediation effects prior to mindfulness, so that the factors are understood as mediating in due order. urther, the study set out to analyze the different characteristics of the two models above, and to clarify the significance and relative weight of the one mediating effects, aiming to identify the more correct and simpler model, explaining the relation between adult attachment and depression.
For this purpose, the subject were 470 university students(male : 221, female : 249) from 7 universities in Daegu & Kyungbook. Date were collected self-report questionnaires, consisting of the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised(APS-R), Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale(MPS), Mindful Attention Awareness(MAAS), Self-Criticism(DEQ), Beck Depression Inventory(BDI).
In analyzing data, this study employed statistical terms and methods such as descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, Cronbach's alpha and the Structural Equation Model(SEM), SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 7.0 program. In clarifying the significance of mediation effects, the Sobel test was used.
Data was analyzed using SEM to explore the mediating effects of mindfulness and self-criticism between evaluate concerns perfectionism and depression. In the first model, the indirect effects of mindfulness and self-criticism appeared statistically significant, while the direct effect of depression were not captured as statistically significant, rather revealing complete mediating effects. This finding confirms the hypothesis of the study in showing that mindfulness and self-criticism each have independent indirect effects, operating at the same level. The findings are evaluate concerns perfectionism didn't have direct effect on depression. Mindfulness mediated the relation between evaluate concerns perfectionism and self-criticism , depression. Structural equation modeling analyses supported a full mediating effect of mindfulness and self-criticism on the relation between evaluate concerns perfectionism and depression.
It suggests that it is necessary to focus on self-criticism & mindfulness when counselling maladaptive perfectionistic(especially, evaluate concerns perfectionistic) students who experience depression.
On the basis of the results of the current study, implications for the counseling and suggestions for future study were discussed.
