The main purpose of this study was to examine the influences of preschooler's temperament, marital conflict, and preschooler's emotion regulation on problem behaviors.
The subjects were 194 preschoolers and their mothers living in Seoul. The data were collected using four kinds of questionnaires such as Buss and Plomin's (1984) EAS(Emotionality, Activity, Shyness), O'Leary and Poter's OPS(O'Leary-Poter Scale), Cicchetti and Shields(1997)'s ERC(Emotion Regulation Checklist), and Behar and Stringfield(1974)'s PBQ(The Preschool Behavior Questionnaire). Data were analysed by Pearson's correlation coefficients and a series of multiple regressions.
The results of this study as follow:
First, when preschooler's shyness and emotionality was higher, emotion regulation was low, whereas, sociability was higher, emotion regulation was high. And when marital conflict was higher, preschooler's emotion regulation was low.
Second, when preschooler's sociability was higher, hostality-aggression was low, whereas activity was higher, hostality-aggression was high. And preschooler's emotion regulation was higher, hostality-aggression was low. And when shyness was higher, anxiety-fearness was higher. And when preschooler's shyness was higher, hyperactivity-distratability was high, whereas activity was higher, hyperactivity-distratability was low. And marital conflict was higher, preschooler's hyperactivity-distratability was low, whereas preschooler's emotion regulation was higher, hyperactivity-distratability was high.
Finally, preschooler's shyness, sociability, emotionality and marital conflict influenced hostality-aggression and hyperactivity-distratability through emotion regulation, indirectly.
This study showed the relationship between preschooler's temperament and emotion regulation, clearly. Also, this study showd preschooler's emotion regulation was a critical factor on externalizing problem behavior such as hostality-aggression and hyperactivity-distratability.
