Seo-dang Lee Duk soo (1673-1744, character : In-no, pen name : Seo-dang, Byeok-gye) was an intellectual who took two times the Myun-hyeon g(the governmental position of greatest scholars) in the Yeong-jo era, at the end of Chosun dynasty. He wrote 169 biji proses, which are Sindobimyung (18 pieces), Myogalmyung(63 pieces, inscriptions on a gravestone), and Myojimyung(88 pieces, which are put in graves) in his collection of works. Because of the distortion of factions and the intensification of the party strife, the bijiryu prose was broken away from practical writings and degraded to the tool for political fights at that time. Recognizing the evil of the literary world, Seo-dang tried to recover it in a right way. So he wanted to present the right direction of the prose by means of the bijiryu prose which formally changed little for long among the oldest proses.
We are going to see the features of the bijiryu prose of Seo-dang. They are summarized as follows. First, Most of his bijiryu works were written in an original form. That is, under the existing stylistic cognition that demands both historiographers' talent and a historical view and at the same time calls for a person to write as based on the truth, he organized them with the reason he writes bijiryu proses, one's native place and family line, officers' career, Biju's personality(Biju, a dead man, a star in his prose), family relations, simple arguments, the date of one's death, funerals , and burial places. So, his works can be regarded as featureless proses that have nothing to get from a literary point of view, and were written only from a practical aspect. Once we examine closely the conditions of that time, however, we can see that the bijiryu proses were being broken away from the scope of the practical literature. Nevertheless, at this situation, it rather seems that the works of Seo-dang who left so many graceful works of original form are worth enough to be illuminated at a new point of view.
Second, when someone asked him to write about a dead man he didn't know well, as he made clear that he couldn't refuse it because of the humanity he tried to make the construction of the prose most strict and fair. I think he did so because he worried that he would be spotted as Yumyo(a man who highly flatter). So while he wrote about Biju with the help of the people he is familiar with he made an great effort to find a way to intensify the objectivity of the works.
Third, Seo-dang left so many bijiryu pieces about the family members and the close acquaintances who died early. As time goes on, the bijiryu works were pulled out from the means for writing about Biju's lifetime and were used to express writers' opinion and feeling. Then maybe biji was enough for Seo-dang who endlessly reflected on and was worried about sentences to express his own opinion. And he And he tried to put the trueness to composition of description ordinary anecdote and memorial scenes, and once expressed sorrows extremely by describing the situation of death very sincerely.
Four, the object of the Bijiryu prose work of Seo-dang was most the man
who he admired associated. We know that the men were deep in Hyo-woo (to act with duty their parent and brothers and sisters), not swept in their party policy and were scholastically superior person. He had a firm belief that not swept in a faction according to the teaching of the departed of his father. He was annoyed by the prevailing state of society of present generlation scholars that did Guijihak(shallow study of quoting another person) and had Ahngosubi (a good critical eye with no executive skill). And Seo-dang sometimes criticized the politician chasing his rich and honor who didn’t think of politics for common people. So Seo-dang was tried to put his world of thought to "Biji" space. So for coming to deliver to descendant people, he expressed by composing Ui-non(a subject argument) especially on Biju who has moral influence and good conduct, who was possible to leave his name behind in his achievement
