The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the social factors of social support, coping resource, as well as to gather injury data, on the type of injury and number of days missed from training and competition due to injury. The participants consist of 5 sports, 120(60 males, 60 females) competitive contact sport athletes, who completed the social factors of social support (SSQ6), coping resource (ACSI-28), and NAIRS(National Athletes Injury Reporting System) to assess the social factors-injury relationship.
The results are as follows:
1. In this study, 89.2% of a sample of 120 participants experienced at least one inury over the year. This study, also, found that the most common type of injury was muscle strain, followed by ligament sprain, contusion and fracture, and the most common location of injury was ankles, followed by knee and upper legs. Of the 89.2% experienced injuries, 34.2% were classified as having minor injuries, 43.3% as having moderate injuries and 11.7% as having major injuries, in terms of days they missed training and competition.
Only the factor of athletic stress among the psychosocial variables was significantly (p<.001) related to the frequency of injuries, whereas significant relationships were not found between personality, coping resource, social support, tension and the severity of injuries.
2. In the analysis of relationship between social factors and the frequency of injuries, there were significant (p< .05) main effects between social support, coping resources and the frequency of injuries.
3. In the analysis of relationship between social factors and injuries(injured and non-injured), there were significant (p< .05) main effects between social support, coping resources and injuries. There was no significant (p> .05) main effect for ender, and the gender by injury interaction.
