This dissertation aims at translating The Chapter of Inspiriting the Mind of Bodhi(enlightenment) in Avatamsa(Huayan, Flower Garland) (華嚴發菩提心章), here after shortly abbreviate it as 『The Chapter』) and adding the explanatory notes to it. Fazang(法藏, 643-712) who is known to be a great contributor to the development and the consolidation of Huayan scholasticism is the author of 『The Chapter』 which consists of four parts: inspiriting the mind(發心) the first(第一), distinguishing the teachings(簡敎) the second(第二), revealing the faults(顯過) the third(第三), indicating the virtues(表德) the fourth(第四). The each of the four parts has also its internal parts. For example, the sub-categories of inspiriting the mind(發心) are straightforward mind(直心), profound mind(深心) and compassionate mind(大悲心) and the each of three sub-categories has its own ten classifications again.
In another approach to the text, it can be said that all the divisions and classifications are covered by 3 questions and 3 answers because, among inspiriting the mind(發心) the first(第一), distinguishing the teachings(簡敎) the second(第二), revealing the faults(顯過) the third(第三), indicating the virtues(表德) the fourth(第四), the first is an answer to the question “what is the ‘inspiriting mind of Bodhi’?”, the second is to the question “while in buddhist practice, is it necessary to learn buddha’s teaching?” and the third and fourth are to the question “are R?pa(matter, 色) and ??nyat?(emptiness, 空) combined or separated?” but it is not easy to understand the answers because of both their theoretical characteristics and the traditional way of having 10 kinds of categories.
However, briefly speaking, 『The Chapter』 can be defined as the book of practice. The practice is mainly about buddhist observation, especially in Huayan(華嚴). There are not the set of rules(戒) and disciplines(律) and the methods of charity observed by Buddhist practitioners. Nevertheless, it can be evaluated that 『The Chapter』 is of great importance in buddhist practice because the text clearly shows the object of observation, the subject of observation and the extinction of line dividing the two by the consilience(融合) between noumenon and phenomenon(理事俱融). 『The Chapter』 contains three kinds of observation(三種觀), namely, 「the observation of true emptiness(?空觀)」, 「the observation of unimpeded interaction of noumenon and phenomenon(理事無?觀)」 and 「the observation of universal inclusion(周遍含容觀)」, which constitute 「indicating the virtues(表德) the fourth(第四)」 with other 「the 10 kinds of cessation and observation in The Chapter about Form and Matter(色空章十門止觀)」 and 「the meaning of consilience between noumenon and phenomenon」(理事圓融義) and are traditionally regarded as the book written by Dushun(杜順, 557-640) under the title of huayan fajie guanmen(華嚴法界觀門). The dispute about the writer of huayan fajie guanmen(華嚴法界觀門) still is undergoing. This paper follows huayan fajie guanmen(華嚴法界觀門) is an excerpt from 『The Chapter』 because it is more consistently understood when put it into the question-answer structure. Therefore, the study of hwayan observation practice should be performed including the other parts in 『The Chapter』, especially focusing on 「the meaning of perfect consilience between noumenon and phenomenon」(理事圓融義).
