This study was performed to examine the influence of mothers' family-of-origin health and self-differentiation on parenting efficacy and parenting attitude.
The participants in this study consisted of 400 mothers in their 30s~50s who have more than 3 years of child-rearing experience in P Metropolitan City. Data were collected through self-reporting questionnaires. Among 372 collected questionnaires, total 300 ones were analysed as a final research material, except 72 ones of which contents were too faithless to be used as data.
For data analysis, one-way ANOVA, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted using SPSS 18.0 program.
The findings of this study are as follows. First, mothers' family-of-origin health showed 3.44, self-differentiation 3.56, parenting efficacy 3.62 and parenting attitude 3.35 in Likert 5-Point Scale Measurement, which are all above average. In family-of-origin health, intimacy level was higher than autonomy. In parenting efficacy, communication ability was the highest and in parenting attitude, love versus hostility was the highest.
Second, about the influence of mothers' family-of-origin health and self-differentiation on parenting efficacy, self-differentiation significantly influenced parenting efficacy, but family-of-origin did not. Among the sub-factors of self-differentiation, cognitive ability versus emotional function and ego-integrity had statistically significant effect on parenting efficacy.
Third, about the influence of mothers' family-of-origin health and self-differentiation on parenting attitude, self-differentiation significantly influenced on parenting attitude, but family-of-origin health did not. Among the sub-factors of self-differentiation, cognitive ability versus emotional function, ego-integrity and emotional cutoff had statistically significant effect on parenting attitude.
Fourth, it is found that mothers' parenting efficacy had significant influence on parenting attitude, expecially among sub-factors of parenting efficacy, general parenting skills and communication ability had meaningful one on it.
According to these research findings, in mothers' family-of-origin health, self-differentiation, parenting efficacy and parenting attitude, it is showed that mothers have faith in their ability and self-efficacy above average level. Moreover, the effects of family-of-origin on child-rearing are significant because mothers' self-differentiation significantly influences on parenting efficacy and parenting attitude. So it is considered that family-of-origin health can be one of the important factors of family-of-origin experience. That is, mothers' self-differentiation influences parenting efficacy and attitude, and family-of-origin health also performs primary role relationship with children or child-rearing experience of mothers with psychological factors through intergenerational transmission.
