The corporate archive management in America started to be introduced to an enterprise in the 1940s. In the early days, the scholars' historical needs were combined with necessity of establishing history and identity in the internal corporation, thus the movement of establishing the Corporate Archival Programs came to be gradually created. As the corporate document production came to be tremendous since the 1950s, the corporation came to have interest in the record management. As the recognition had been expanded that the record management can perform a role of supporting business since the 1970s, many corporation introduced record management program and came to employ the corporate archivist and record consultant.
As automation and digitalization in business are further accelerated recently, the volume of information, which is produced by corporation, increases steeply, and even the format of the record, which is produced, came to be much diversified such as image file, video file, and e-mail. Also, as the corporate compliance increases and as the corporate activity sphere is globally expanded, the management of information related to compliance came to have importance enough to have influence upon the corporate existence.
Due to this, America's corporate Archive managed the archival record, thereby having come to be in charge of a positive role that protects risk, supports business, and further enhances capability of knowledge as well as proceeding with forming the corporate collective memory.
On the other hand, our country's corporate record management is now just in the stage of the beginning. Many corporations are failing yet to realize the consistent archival management according to life cycle of the record. And, the reality, which failed to be established the law on the corporate record management, the government's support, and the professional organization for the corporate record management, is showing the absence of recognition on the corporate archival record management in the whole society. Based on this critical mind, this study aimed to examine about a plan for introducing the corporate archival programs to our country, through cases in North America.
Accordingly, this study examined the looks of the corporate archival programs in North America. According to survey, the corporate Archives in North America were being operated centering on internal users. Unlike this, they promote the Archive to all of internal and external users and were equipped with the separately exhibition function for them, thereby having created effects of educating staffs, promoting company loyalty, publicizing corporation, and reinforcing corporate reliability.
In addition, the Archive supported the corporate function by offering diverse services to internal users, and was allowing the internal users to possibly use timely and conveniently by providing a copy of the record through e-mail, fax, and web site.
Even in our country's corporation, the interest in information management is being recently highlighted due to the strengthening in corporate regulation and to a rise in a lawsuit targeting corporation. With having this change as an opportunity, we need to persuade many corporations to be capable of turing the eyes to the record management. In order to be introduced the archival programs to corporation, there is necessity of an archivist's effort, of legal provisions related to corporate record management, and also of the nation's positive role such as financial and intellectual support. And, the corporate Archive will need to proceed with establishing and driving the propulsive archival policy by being given powerful authority amidst the close connection with other departments.
