In this study, I wished to review in Body Painting work of creative work with personality and characteristic of symbolism. I wished to suggest motive that analyzes several characteristics of 19th century symbolism conversation and esthetics that writer's idea is reflected mainly and is new in Body Painting field. With such symbolism esthetics study, I wished to display Body Painting of work that have art sex. That is a representative symbolism painter as for symbolism writer's study extent diagonally, I put limiting point by Mungkeu, Reudong. Expressed in canvas and human body and compare various techniques that is applied in symbolism with study of singularity.
Body Painting is effective to manage subject that is private regarding symbolism reflect writer's idea to three-dimensional space that is a human body and when produce work regarding human body by Body Painting specially, effect that raise subject was enlarged. Can help symbolism pictorial expression can give possibility as new theme Body Painting writers through work study and develops various Body Painting territory I am considered. 국문 초록 (Abstract)

Body Painting은 인간의 신체에 시각적으로 표현할 수 있는 모든 방법을 동원하여 이미지를 영상화하는 것으로 사람의 몸에 그림을 그려 정적인 작품에서 벗어나 그 작품에 생명력을 불어넣는 작업이라 할 수 있다. 원시 시대의 적이나 맹수로부터 자신을 보호하고 계급이나 신성함을 나타내기 위해 또는 주술적 행위로 사용되거나 종족을 구별하기 위해 오랜 세월 전부터 사용되어 오던 Body Painting이 2002 한일 월드컵에서 민족의 강한 단결력과 힘을 과시하는 한 수단으로 사용되어진바 있다.
Body Painting은 사람이 움직일 때마다 생동감을 느낄 수 있게 하는 데에 그 의의가 있다. 상업적으로는 지방 축제, 기업체 이벤트 및 놀이동산 등에서 행사용으로 이용되는 Body Painting도 있는데 상업적인 페인팅이 우리에게 더 친근하고 가깝게 다가와 있다.
현대의 Body Painting은 작가의 상징적 개념을 창조적인 형식과 내용을 통해 구체적으로 인체에 표현하는 응용미술분야로서 무한한 발전 가능성을 지니고 있다. 다양한 미술사조와의 결합으로 작품으로서의 예술성과 표현력을 높일 수 있다. Body Painting 작품은 작가의 창조 의도가 중요시 되며 다양한 미적 표현이 가능하다는 점에서 19세기에 유행하였던 상징주의 미학과 유사하다.
Body Painting은 선행연구에서 주로 바디 아트의 일부분으로 평가 연구되었다. 본 연구자는 체계적인 이론 정립을 위해 단행본 및 관련 서적과 문헌을 연구하였다. Body Painting의 기원을 살펴보고 표로 정리하였으며 시대별 변천사를 연구 하였다. 또한 다양한 Body Painting 표현방법을 연구하여 표로 정리하였다.
본 연구자는 19세기 미술사조인 상징주의를 연구하고 상징주의의 특징들을 분석하여 Body Painting의 소재로서의 유사성과 특징을 분석하고자 하였다. 상징주의의 인간의 내부 심리 표출에 대한 특성은 인간에 관한 관점에서 출발한다는 점에서 Body Painting의 좋은 소재가 된다. Body Painting은 인체를 통해서 표현이 가능한 예술임으로 인간에 대한 관심이 가장 기본적이라고 할 수 있다. 19세기 상징주의 예술은 작가의 이데아를 부각시켜 개인과 관련된 사물, 여인, 꿈, 죽음과 삶 등이 주요 관념으로 다루어졌다. 상징주의 미술은 동시대의 문학, 음악, 미술 등의 여러 예술분야의 종합적인 형태로서 표현되어 발전하였다. Body Painting은 음악, 모델의 율동, 조명, 페인팅 재료와 기법 등 여러 요소들이 종합된 종합예술로서의 성격을 갖고 있어 상징주의 예술과 유사성이 있었다.
본 연구에서는 상징주의의 성격과 특징을 바탕으로 창조적 작업으로서의 Body Painting 작품에 재조명 하고자 하였다. 작가의 관념이 주로 반영된 19세기 상징주의 회화의 여러 특징과 미학을 분석하여 Body Painting 분야에 새로운 모티브를 제안하고자 하였다. 이와 같은 상징주의 미학 연구를 바탕으로 예술성을 지닌 작품으로서의 Body Painting을 선보이고자 하였다. 상징주의 작가의 연구범위로서는 대표적인 상징주의 화가인 모로, 뭉크, 르동으로 제한점을 두었다.
이상의 연구를 바탕으로 상징주의에서 응용된 다양한 기법들을 캔버스와 인체에 표현하여 비교해보았다. Body Painting은 인체라는 3차원 공간에 작가의 관념을 투영함으로 상징주의와 관련하여 개인적인 주제를 다루는데 효과적이며 특히 인체와 관련한 작품을 Body Painting으로 제작 할 때 주제를 부각시키는 효과가 증대되었다. 작품연구를 통해 상징주의 회화적 표현은 Body Painting 작가들에게 새로운 소재로서의 가능성을 부여할 수 있으며 다양한 Body Painting 영역을 발전시키는데 일조할 수 있으리라고 사료된다. 본 연구 논문은 상징주의 미술 사조를 응용한 Body Painting 작품연구를 통해 새로운 모티브로서의 Body Painting을 제시하고자 하였다.
