The departments of stage lighting in Korean universities provide both education on the design process where texts are imaged with light, and education on the design implementation process for stage embodiment of actual theaters. However, the education of the stage lighting design implementation process in colleges is more focused on the design process rather than the design implementation process due to a lack of practicum places, such as theaters and studios, and professors with professional knowledge and capacity of stage lighting. Departments with a stage lighting major have opened and operated courses where a piece of performance is actually produced to solve these problems by helping students understand the importance of the design implementation process. Considering that such lectures are practical experience for major activities after graduation for students, they are no more than a practicum to implement the design process rather than a reflection of the overall professional production process of stage lighting in the field.
It is important for students to experience producing a quality performance, but the stage lighting industry has a limitation in that the design needs to be checked at the theater. Therefore, it is also educationally important for students to implement design safely within the given time and conditions like the actual process in the field.
Accordingly, the education of stage lighting performance production needs to be operated by connecting the field of the performance industry and job training and qualification based on the National Competency Standard so that students can make the best use of their ability after graduation and adapt to the field quickly. This research analyzed the production process of stage lighting in college and the field to explore the difference, and studied if job training that centered on capacity and key ability can improve the students’ skills required in the field.
Under the assumption that college education is different from the field, the system of the production process of stage lighting and the design implementation process suggested by NCS and the performance production in college was compared and analyzed; the production process of stage lighting for “Oedipus: Son of Jocasta” (herein after referred to as “Oedipus”) performed by a practicum lecture of performance production at Major of Play, Department of Performance Creation at Chung-Ang University was analyzed. The research could analyze various cases, but it focused on a single play as the researcher considered that plays have a similar production process of stage lighting, unlike musicals, co-creation and interdisciplinary arts performance that have distinctive characteristics of each genre, from his ten years of experience in participant observation of the production process of stage lighting as a performance production director at the major of Chung-Ang University. The play “Oedipus” was analyzed in the way of participant observation, and stage lighting NCS National Competency Unit was followed for the structure.
This research has limitations in that the contents cannot be verified or compared with other preceding research materials as it was conducted with a few research cases on the educational application of National Competency Standard for the production process of stage lighting in college.
Since art education needs to be provided along with technology that can realize images created based on students’ creative thinking and imagination in detail, it is required to develop performance art as well as performance art education in more professional areas by developing, revising and supplementing various and specific learning modules continuously.
