The rapid development of industrial society has made mass media grow into an important industry. The repaid development of mass media has prompted students to gain easy access to popular music and to imitate it. Therefore it is absoultely necessary that teachers should break away form the conventional way of music class, determine the emotion and psychology of teachers and grope for an agreement between the contents of the curriculum and the desire of students.
This study is designed to determine the differences between students and teachers in terms of a tendency for the preference of popular music, the necessity of the education of popular music, and the method of the education of popular music, etc. now that popular music is closely related to the life of the young. The researcher made use of questionnaires with a view to making a practical analysis of data. The subjects were composed of a total of 264 students and a total of 25 teachers working for a middle school located in Suweon.
The subjects thing that popular music is not a profound music and that it serves only as a factor of entertainment even though students have a liking for it and try to imitate it. Yet the education of popular music should be conducted at the earliest possible day. The problem is that the introduction of popular music to class can be contrary to the purpose of school education due to a decrease in the quality of class, the distraction of class and the commercialism of popular music. Yet it is not true of all popular music. It is necessary that the young should cultivate their sentiments and life a sound music life.
