It is said that the ultimate goal ta educate people with mental retardations is to bring them intergration. They not only have different progress levels, diverse behaviors, and imitating abilities, but they also are of sexual desires. Since growing number of people with mental retardations have returned to their community nowadays, there has been a need for them to have had basic level of sex education.
The purpose of this research is tr look for the right direction of sex education program for people with mental retardations who is capable of being trained through evaluating the effectiveness of the sex education which is developed to improve their knowledge of sex and sexual attitudes.
The sex education program was organized to four groups of 38 people with mental retardations who is capable of being trained in the CRC(ChunMa Rehabilitation Center) from 21 July to 23 December 1999. In order to see how effective the sex education program is, group pretest-posttest design is applied: that is to say, the same questionnaire was circulated before and after the program and then the results are compared in respect of their knowledge of sex and sexual attitudes.
The major findings of the study are as follows:
1. The sex education program carried out in this research is effective for adult people with mental retardations who are in a advanced level, especially in the area of the general knowledge of sex, the function of body parts, and sexual identity.
2. The effectiveness of the sex education program in terms of their sexual attitudes could not be proved since the program was made up of short them lecture, discussion and role-play and was helpful in the knowledge of sex.
3. The sex education program is more effective for less handicapped people: It was more effective in the superior two group of which member is less handicapped among four groups.
Therefore, not only does this research clarify detailed areas where the sex education is effective, but it also suggest the necessity of the sex education program according to the level of people with mental retardations. The outcome of the research also is affirmative, especially in the area of the knowledge of sex, which suggests that the sex education program can help people with mental retardations to have the affirmative knowledge of sex. Use of this program is expected to contribute to the further professionalization and upgrading of social work in Korea.
