In this study, a laboratory scale wetlands with Oenanthe Javanica to treat sewage was operated in the free water surface(FWS) mode. Based on N mass balance, approximately 31% of the nitrogen loaded into wetland operating at HRT 10 days, were accounted for the amount of N assimilation into the plant tissues, resulting in the TN and COD removal efficiencies of 58%, and 82%, respecitively. For Nitrogen removal in wetland with plants, a sequential nitrification denitrification reaction and plant uptake are two major treatment mechanism. This study appears that water depth of around 6cm, nitrogen loading rate less than 0.1 g TN/㎡ day and HRT around 10 days at 20 ℃ as operating conditions of wetland with Oenanthe Javanica need to TN and COD removal efficiencies of about 70% and 85%.
