인간을 위한 생명과학의 윤리적 토대 구축

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 번 단계(3차년도)의 핵심연구 내용은 <뇌과학과 뇌신경 연구를 위한 윤리적 토대 구축>을 하는 것이었다. 뇌과학은 단순히 인체의 물리적 속성과 작동 기제만을 다루는 것이 아니라 마음과 신체, 즉 인간의 심리상태와 행동양식까지도 그 대상으로 삼고 있다. 이러한 점에서 지금까지 미지의 영역으로만 남았던 뇌의 메커니즘에 대한 연구는 오늘날 인문학과 자연과학, 사회과학을 포괄하는 총체적인 분야로서 중요하게 여겨지며, 그 결과 뇌과학이 거둔 성과는 그 자체로 인간과 인간 사이의 문제, 즉 사회적 문제에 대한 해석으로 환원될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 극단적인 형태의 살인사건에 대해 과거에는 이러한 현상을 사회적으로, 혹은 개인의 성장배경에 초점을 맞추어 심리학적으로 분석했지만, 이제는 범인들의 뇌영상을 보고 그들의 뇌가 다른 보통 사람들의 뇌와 어떻게 다른지를 파악함으로써 범죄의 동기와 죄의 유무를 판단하려고 한다. 그 대표적인 예가 사이코패스(psychopathy)이다. 또한 뇌신경 의학의 발달로 인하여 정신 장애자(이상자)나 사고로 인하여 뇌의 치명적인 손상을 입었을 경우, 뇌에 칩을 심거나 향정신성 약물을 투여함으로써 뇌를 치료하고자 하며, 뇌사와 같은 경우에는 뇌이식 수술을 권장한다. 심지어 앞으로는 인간을 비롯한 이종 동물 간의 뇌를 맞바꾸는 이식수술이 진행될 조짐이다. 이처럼 뇌연구는 과학기술과 의학의 급진적인 발전으로 인하여 예상치 못한 사태를 맞이할 수 있으며, 이로 인하여 뇌과학은 인류가 이제껏 경험하지 못한 새로운 윤리적 딜레마를 야기시킬 것이다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 뇌과학과 뇌치료 연구로 인해 발생할 수 있는 여러 문제점을 종합적으로 검토하고 이에 대한 윤리적 토대를 구축하고자 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

At this stage(the 3rd year), the main target of our research is <building up ethical foundations for brain science and cerebral nerve researches>. Brain science deals not just with the physical attributes and mechanism of the body part itself, but also with both relations between the mind and the body, or more specifically, people's psychological state and behavioral style. In this sense, today, researches on the brain mechanism, which has remain unknown, are given spotlights from any kinds of disciplines ranging from the humanities to natural science and to social science. In association, accomplishments from brain science seem to be reduced into the interpretations of problems with interpersonal relations, or broadly, social problems. In the past, for example, extreme murder cases were the focus of psychological analysis that viewed those cases as social phenomena and tried to look into backgrounds behind which persons who committed the murders had grown up. But now, such analysis is giving way to the examination of those persons' brain images, determining how much their brains are different from ordinary people's and pointing out the motives and punishability of the murders.
