This study analyzes themes of TV ombudsman programs reviewed by viewer critics. The study aims to identify the current problems of Korean broadcast programs, and a gap in the perception of programs between producers and viewers. Also, it aims to highlight the importance of the ombudsman programs and to widen the horizon of relevant research.
Various broadcasters' ombudsman programs involving viewer critics, telecasted from June 2011 to May 2012, were examined. Data were gathered through the broadcasters' websites. Titles and/or the whole programs were reviewed.
The analysis revealed that news were not nearly the themes of viewer critics, because they were handled otherwise, and that mainly dramas and entertainment programs were handled. Most of critic themes focused on the absence of broadcasting's public interest and public nature, unethicalness, and protection of viewer rights. Also, criticized were dramas deviating from common sense and ethics, extremely stimulating settings, unethical descriptions, personal attack expressions, commercialization of sex in programs, fixed concept of sex's role, and criticism of reproduction.
