1930년대 식민지와 미궁의 심상지리 = Colonial Chosun and Imaginative Geography of the Labyrinth in Korean Novels of the Late 1930s : Focusing on Park Tae Won and Lee Hyo Seok

국문 초록 (Abstract)

박태원과 이효석은 서구예술의 체험을 통해서 세계사적 감각으로 다른 나라 문학을 참조하고 이를 통해서 조선의 현실에 대응하는 창조적인 작품을 창작했다. 이들이 중심적으로 사유했던 문제는 식민지 미궁의 심상지리로 표상되는 공간의 문제였다. 미궁의 심상지리는 제국과 식민지의 관계를 반영하면서 동시에 이러한 관계를 벗어날 수 있는 공간을 탐색하는 것이다.
구체적으로 박태원은 당대의 “아일랜드”담론 안에서 제임스조이스(James Joyce)의 문학을 참조하면서 『천변풍경』을 통해서 식민지에 대한 부정적 인식을 극복할 수 있는 공간으로서 경성을 표상하고자 했다. 이효석은 프랑스의 뒤비비에(Julien Duvivier) 감독의 「페페 르 모코(Pp-le-Moko)」를 적극적으로 소설화 했다. 「여수」의 화자인 ‘나’는 자신의 정체성을 카스바와 함께 몰락한 도시인 하얼빈과 동일시한다. 그는 영화의 유럽 중심적인 정체성의 추구와는 반대로 몰락한 하얼빈이라는 공간에 대한 동일시를 통해서 러시아, 일본, 미국 등의 제국의 각축과정에서 배제된 이질적인 인종과 문화를 지닌 디아스포라의 연대의 공간을 창조하고자 했다.
이처럼 박태원과 이효석은 식민지적 관계를 넘어 설 수 있는 심상 지리를 문학적으로 형상화하고자 했다. 당대 영문학과 영화체험은 문인들에게 선험적인 근대가 아니라 구체적인 경험이었으며, 단순히 서구중심주의나 근대성에 편입되는 과정이 아니라 조선의 현실에 대응하기 위한 탈식민적 계기를 포함하는 의식적인 과정이었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Park Tae Won and Lee Hyo Seok, who acquired distinguished insights into the world with their deep appreciation of the Western Arts, were aspired from other countries’ literature and created remarkable literary works against the colonial situation of Chosun. In their works written during the colonial period, one of their main themes was the issue of space represented as imaginative geography of the labyrinth. This imaginative geography of the labyrinth reflects the relation between the empire and the colony, and at the same time implies the exploration of the space where Empire and Europe can be overcame.
Particularly, in “Riverside scenary(천변풍경)”, with the references from James Joyce’s Literature in the context of Irish Discussion, Park Tae Won tried to represent the city of Gyung Sung as the space where the negative recognition on the colony could be overcame, Lee Hyo Seok wrote “Yeo Soo(여수)” as the novelization of Julien Duvivier’s film, “Pépé-le-Moko”. The narrator of “Yeo Soo” identifies himself with the city of Harbin, which was falling with Khasba. In contrast to the pursuit of Euro-centric identity revealed in the film, Lee strived to create a space of the solidarity ofdiaspora composed of different culture and ethnicity, which were excluded from the severe competition among Empires such as Russia, Japan, and the United States.
Park Tae Won and Lee Hyo Seok attempted to represent the imaginative geography of overcoming the relation between the empire and the colony. Appreciating English literature and western films at that time did not mean a priori Modernism. Rather, it provided them with the real experience on the West. Furthermore, this was not the process of being integrated into the West or modernity, but the struggle including the postcolonial opportunity against the colonial situation of Chosun.
