“요요 이행”과 “DIY 일대기”: 이행기 청년들의 노동경험과 생애 서사에 대한 질적 분석 = “Yo-Yo Transition” and “DIY Biography”: A qualitative analysis on the labor experience and life course narrative of youth in Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 20명의 이행기 청년들과의 심층면접을 통해 이행기 청년들의 노동경험을 일상적인 삶의 과정 안에서 역동적으로 분석하고, 아울러 청년들이 자신의 이행 경험을 인식하는 주관적 서사와 스스로 대응하는 태도를 고찰했다. 청년들의 경험에서 나타나는 특징들은 한마디로 취업과 교육/훈련 사이를 오가는 ‘요요(yo-yo) 이행’이라고 표현할 수 있으며 청년들이 선택할 수 있는 진로가 다양화되는 양상은 뚜렷하게 나타나지 않는다. 그러나 한정된 진로 안에서 전진과 후퇴를 반복하는 요요 이행의 과정은 가족자원, 젠더, 거주지역 등 개인의 조건에 따라 다른 양상을 보인다. 즉 이행경로의 다원화가 아니라, 단선적인 이행의 과정 안에서 상이한 시점에 상이한 이유로 정체 혹은 후퇴를 반복하는 파편화된 경로로 귀결되는 것이다. 그 결과 뚜렷한 장기계획이나 진로계획이 없는 채로 생계형 노동을 반복하는 청년들은 경제적 배제뿐 아니라 사회적 관계로부터의 고립, 정신건강상의 위기 등 중첩된 배제를 겪고 있다. 자신들의 이행 경험에 대한 청년들의 주관적인 해석을 살펴보면, 장기계획의 부재와 미래의 조망불가능성, 취업준비와 생계형 노동으로 이어지는 시간적 압박, 구직활동에서의 ‘하향적 적응’이나 자기 보호를 위한 ‘선택’을 정당화하는 태도들이 나타난다. 이러한 일련의 과정과 주관적 서사들은 ‘DIY 일대기’의 형성으로 요약할 수 있다. 청년들은 자신이 처한 상황에서 나름대로 개인적인 선택을 하고 있지만 그 선택의 실상은 부족한 자원, 사회적 제도간의 모순 등에 직면해서 ‘혼자서 모든 것을 다 해결해야 하는’ 상황에 다름 아니다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Based on the in-depth interview, this article examines the labor experiences and subjective attitudes of 20 young persons who are in the process of transition toward adulthood in Korea. Recent experience of young people with regard to labor market participation can be characterized as ``yo-yo transition`` which means a ``back and forth swing`` between job position and education/training. In Korea, considerable decrease of job opportunity for young people since the financial crisis of 1997 has reinforced the demand for university education and long period of individual preparation to get highly competitive jobs. Recent literatures on youth transition emphasize that the standard and linear life course to adulthood has been transformed and diversified with the rise of individulalized biography in the post-capitalist social relations. However, it is not the ``choice biography`` but the ``DIY(Do it yourself) biography`` that we can find from these interviews. Unlike the choice biography which highlight the extended and diversified opportunities for the young people with permeating process of individualization, the ``DIY biography`` tend to focus on the burden of young people to set a individual negotiation to cope with the lack of resources, institutional discontinuities, and unprecedented changes of opportunities structures. Many interviewees are repeatedly caught in a unstable move between education and marginalized labor without organized career plan, and they are often confronted with social and economic exclusion, isolation from relationship, and even mental health problem. This article also analyses the subjective attitudes and narratives among young people that are typically presented as deprivation of long term life plan, confused perspective on their future, downward adjustment to the deteriorated job condition, etc. In some cases, a bit of ``cognitive trick`` is included in their self presentation that it is better and safer to ``choose`` casual jobs one after another for themselves than to be caught in a strict and inhumane atmosphere of working place. All these processes and attitudes are configurated as the ``DIY biography`` which contains dual process of the extension of individualization on the one hand and the decrease of decent jobs accompanied by the neoliberal readjustment on the other hand.
