The relation of body and mind in the Oriental religions of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism is monism, a little different from Western monism. In the Occident "one" is "inclusive all" and "two" is "exclusive difference, "But the two basic principles of Confucianism, Taoisic concepts of "one" and "two" and Buddhistic views of "all" and "none" should not be interpreted by way of the socalled Cartesian dualism, Rather, they are appropriate to the observation of a somato-psychic unit.
Focusing on the mind than the body, however, three Oriental thoughts gave helped boost the idea that somatic factors can, and should be neglected, With this principle of Physical education, therefore, proper physical education. The following are the conclusions from this study on the comparison of somatic views of the Orient and Occdient.
1. The Oriental somatic view expressed by three religions if consistently somato-psychic monism, with nature creating human body. On the Contrary, the Occidental somatic view included a somato-psychic unit theory as well as psycho-somatic dualism.
2. In the Orient, more attention was laid upon the mind than the body, which was naturally neglected. The role of human body was merely to keep fit untritionally and to train for a was, In the West, however, the longing for phsical beauty arising from the Greek view of somatic excellence has led to the "Movement of Sports for All" But the Occidental view also once tended to neglect Physical activities.
Nowadays we see many profund research activities on the somatic view as a way of probing philosophical background of physical education. Lots of papers have emerged and show the tendency to take psycho-somatic momism. Like Harris said, we might have to regard a human being as a somsto-psychic unit, not as a divided unit into the body and the mind.
