결과주의 비판 -온전성과 분배 정의, 교환 정의의 문제를 중심으로- = A Criticism on Consequentialism -Focusing on the Issues of Integrity, Distributive Justice, and Commutative Justice-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

행위의 도덕성을 그 행위가 야기하는 결과적 사태의 가치로 판단하는 결과주의에서 원칙적으로 제시하는 유일한 도덕적 판단 기준은 비개인적 관점에서 바라본 전체 세계의 총합적 가치의 최대화이다. 이에 따라 전체의 이익과 충돌할 때마다 개인은 자신의 이익과 신념, 삶의 기획을 모두 포기하도록 도덕적으로 요구되고, 결과적으로 각 개인의 개별성은 적절하게 존중받을 근거를 잃어버리게 된다. 본 논문에서는 결과주의가 도덕적 이론으로서 지닌 한계를 온전성, 분배 정의, 그리고 교환 정의의 측면에서 살펴본다. 우선 온전성의 측면에서, 자신의 신념과 가치관에 따라 온전한 삶을 꾸려가야 할 개인은 결과주의적 원칙 하에 전체의 선을 위해 필요할 때마다 자신의 이익이나 삶의 기획을 포기하도록 도덕적으로 강요되며, 따라서 내적으로 분열된 삶을 살게 된다. 둘째, 분배 정의의 측면에서 결과주의는 개인과 사회의 관계를 왜곡시켜 개인이 독립된 개별자가 아니라 전체 사회의 선을 위해 기능하는 부품이 되게 하는데, 이러한 ‘전체의 선’은 특히 좋음의 관계적 개념에 근거하여 볼 때 공허하거나 부차적인 것으로 드러날 수 있다. 마지막으로 결과주의는 개인 간의 주고받음의 관계에서 손해와 이익이 발생할 때 각 당사자가 자신의 손해를 적절하게 보상받아야 한다는 교환 정의의 원칙을 적절히 수용하지 못하는데, 이 교환 정의의 원칙은 각 개인의 개별성의 존중을 위해서 뿐 아니라 공동체의 유지를 위해 반드시 필요한 원리이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

According to consequentialism in which an action’s being right depends on the value of its consequent state, the only moral standard is the maximization of the overall value of the world as a whole, judged from an impersonal standpoint; thus, each individual is required to forgo her own interests, convictions, and life plans whenever they compete with the good of the whole. Hence, the separateness of an individual person fails to be properly respected in consequentialism. In this paper, I will discuss the shortcomings of consequentialism as a moral theory in terms of integrity, distributive justice, and commutative justice. First of all, with respect to integrity, each individual is supposed to form a life in accordance with her own convictions and values; however, under the consequentialist principle, since she is morally obliged to give up her own interests and life plans whenever necessary for the pursuit of the good of the whole, her life becomes split internally and she loses her integrity. Secondly, in terms of distributive justice, an individual’s relationship with her society is distorted when she is forced to live the consequentialist principle: Her separateness being ignored, she is reduced to be an expendable part that only functions for the good of the whole. However, especially in terms of the relational concept of good, this ‘good of the whole’ may turn out to be something empty or secondary. Finally, consequentialism cannot accommodate commutative justice, according to which any person’s loss in the context of an exchange between individuals ought to be properly compensated. However, this commutative justice makes a necessary principle for keeping a community, not only an individual in it, intact.
