원불교의 일원상 신앙 : 진리적 종교의 신앙성 = Won-Buddhism’s Faith in Il-Won-Sang : Faith in a religion based on truth

In the Won-Buddhist scholarly circle, several arguments have been put forth to re-name the object of faith of Won-Buddhism as Wonbulnim(圓佛님) instead of Il-Won-Sang, the Dharmakya Buddha. Those who hold this position argue that changing the name will strengthen the faith of Won-Buddhism. However, these claims uncritically reflect a Christian perspective on religion and faith and overlook the individual characteristics of the faith of Il-Won-Sang. This research aims to reveal the limitations of the title, Wonbulnim by discussing the individual characteristics of the religion based on truth. As such, this study examines the following four topics: First, in the chapter on Matteo Ricci’s Principle and Wonbulnim, logical similarities between Wonbulnim and the Christian perspective on faith are discussed. Second, in the chapter on religion based on Truth and transcendence, religious transcendence and absoluteness are proved through the interaction of the Way (to) that is free from arising nor ceasing and the principle of the retribution and response of cause and effect. Third, the chapter on the manifestation of faith in truth based on religion, highlights that faith in Il-Won-Sang has an immanent transcendence by internalizing the principle of Il-Won-Sang, which can be different from unidirectional worship for an external object. Fourth, the chapter on the sublime and wonder in the Truth based on religion identifies the emotional aspects of Il-Won-Sang by reviewing how the feelings of the sublime and wonder are expressed in the Fourfold Grace (四恩). This study is meaningful in finding out the limitations of using a title that reflects a Christian position, and analyzing the nature and characteristics of the faith of Il-Won-Sang within the system of Won-Buddhist doctrine.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

원불교의 신앙심을 강화하기 위하여 ‘법신불 일원상’ 대신에 ‘원불님’으로 신앙의 대상에 위격을 부여하자는 논의가 제기되었다. 그러나 호칭에 관한 논리는 신앙에 관한 기독교적 관점이 무비판적으로 반영된 것으로, 진리적 종교로서 일원상 신앙의 개체적 특징을 간과하고 있다. 본 연구는 위격 호칭에 관한 주장의 한계를 밝히고, 이에 대한 반증으로 진리적 종교로서 일원상 신앙의 개체적 특징이 무엇인지 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해서 본 연구는 다음의 네 가지 주제를 단계적으로 논의한다. 첫째, ‘마테오 리치(Matteo Ricci)의 이법성과 원불님’에서는 신앙의 호칭에 위격을 부여하자는 주장과 신앙의 대상에 관한 기독교적 관점의 논리적 유사성이 논의된다. 둘째,‘진리적 종교와 초월성’에서는 일원상의 ‘생멸없는 도’와 ‘인과보응되는 이치’의 상호작용을 통해 종교적 초월성과 절대성을 확인한다. 셋째, ‘진리적 종교의 신앙성 발현’에서는 일원상 신앙이 일원상의 도를 체득하는 내적초월주의의 특성으로, 외적 대상에 대한 일방적 숭배와 차이가 있음을 밝힌다. 넷째, ‘진리적 종교의 숭고와 경이’에서는 사은신앙에서 숭고와 경이의 감정이 어떻게 표출되는지 살펴봄으로써 일원상 신앙의 정서적 측면을 확인한다. 본 연구는 호칭문제의 기독교적 관점의 한계를 지적하면서, 일원상 신앙의 본질과 특성을 원불교 교학의 체계에서 해석한 것에 의미가 있다.
