To reevaluate the infraspecific relationships among the varieties and populations of Lycoris sangumea Max., twelve floral characters in var. koreana from both Korea (Mt. Paikyang) and Japan (Kyushu area), var. sanguinea, and var. kiushiana were investigated and assessed by the principal components (PC) analysis. L. sangumea var. kiushiana was distinguished from others by PC 1 (higher loadings shown in lengths of stamen, perianth segment, and style); the Korean population of var. koreana from others by PC 2 (higher loadings in width of perianth segment and length of perianth tube); and the Japanese population of var. koreana from others by PC 3 (higher loadings in lengths of pedicel and ovary). The result suggested that L sanguinea var. koreana from Japan is more closely related to var. sanguinea than var. koreana from Korea and the Japanese population of var. koreana should be treated as a separate taxon.
