공산주의적 인간의 얼굴과 몸 = 동시대 북한미술의 몸 재현

국문 초록 (Abstract)

북한미술은 “인간의 외면(몸)을 통해 인간의 내면을 인식하는 것”을 목적으로 했던 관상학(physiognomy), 또는 골상학(phrenology)의 접근방식을 계승하고 있다. 그들은 과거의 관상학자, 또는 골상학자들처럼 몸과 정신, 외적 작용과 내적 정신의 명확한 인과 관계를 수립하기 위해 노력했다. 구체적으로 그것은 얼굴의 어떤 표정을 특정 감정과 연결짓는 식으로 표정-감정의 목록을 작성하거나 특정한 몸의 자세를 특정한 정신상태에 귀결시키는 식으로 전개되었다. 오늘날 북한미술에 등장하는 ‘공산주의적 인간의 전형’이란 이렇게 만들어진 공식과 규범을 충실히 따르고 있다. 이것은 분명히 지배체제가 미술가들에게 요구한 공산주의적 인간의 전형 창조에 효과적인 전략이었다. 인물화에 관한 한 북한미술의 전체 역사는 표정-감정, 자세-정신상태의 목록과 규범을 확장, 정교화시키는 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 그렇게 북한미술에 등장하는 인물의 표정과 자세는 시간이 지날수록 점점 더 매끈하게 다듬어지게 되었다.
그럼으로써 그들은 과거 관상학자들 내지 골상학자와 똑같은 오류에 빠진다. 18세기 독일의 유명한 관상학자였던 라바터(J. C. Lavater)는 인간 얼굴의 외적형상에서 종교적으로 설정된 텍스트적 의미를 읽어내고자 했다. 그러나 그는 자신이 자의적으로 설정한 기의만을 읽어낼 수 있으며 따라서 그의 오독은 필연적이다. 한 때 과학의 지위를 누렸던 관상학이 지금 사이비과학으로 전락한 데에는 그럴만한 이유가 있는 셈이다. 이러한 문제제기는 명목상 사실주의를 표방하는 주체미술의 몸 재현에도 적용할 수 있을 것이다. 그들은 현실의 탐구에서 언제나 이미 정해진 해답만을 도출하고, 이미 만들어진 틀을 현실의 인간에 덮어 씌어 이른바 ‘생동한’ 공산주의적 인간의 몸을 창출한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The North Korean Art have succeeded to the approach of physiognomy or phrenology having for it’s aim to “recognize inner side of man by his outer side, namely his body.” Like the past physiognomists or phrenologists, North Korean Artist have tried to establish the clear ‘causal relationship’ between body(outside) and soul(inside). So they have made up a expression/emotion catalogue and using it when they take a person in their art works. “The archetypes of communist” in contemporary North Korean Art following this rule and canon faithfully. Therefore they could contribute to the formation of “Communistic Human” towards the needs of the governing system. So far as the figure(person) painting is concerned, The History of North Korean Art is the process of extension and elaboration of expression/emotion catalogue(canon).
As a result, They are falling into the fallacy that of the physiognomist. In the 18th century, the famous physiognomist J. C. Lavater had tried to read the religious signified in the face of man. However, He could read the signified(meaning) only he wanted to find out. Therefore misreading is inevitable. As such physiognomy, once had maintained the status of science, have fallen to the pseudo-science. The same is true of the body representation of North Korean Art. North Korean Artist have tried to read the political(or social) signified in the face of man. However, They can read the signified(meaning) that they want to find out.
