바다를 향수하는 ‘냉동어’의 허무의식 = THE SENSE OF EMPTINESS AS NOSTALGIA OF THE SEA IN 「NAENG DONG UH(冷凍魚)」

국문 초록 (Abstract)

채만식은 「냉동어」에서 냉엄한 현실 속의 한 지식인을 그렸다. 그는 애초에 신념과 생활을 지닌 인물이었으나 더 이상 한가롭게 대처할 수 없는 시대에 묵묵히 자기응시의 길을 택할 수밖에 없었다. ‘써야 될 내용’이 요구되는 시절에 이를 적절한 안전장치로 사용하며 필요한 것은 감추고 불필요한 것은 마음놓고 드러내며, 피할 수 없는 자신의 허무의식을 표현한 것이다. 종래에 없던 자전적 주인공을 세워 연애담의 줄거리로 자신의 목소리를 들려 준 것도 일종의 ‘감추기 위한 드러내기’로 볼 수 있다.
따라서 채만식이 이 작품을 계기로 친일의 길로 접어들었다는 주장은 재고의 여지가 많다. 그는 단지 연애담의 서사구조로 화석화하는 허무의식과 함께 자기응시의 과정을 담담히 그렸기 때문이다. 강조하건대 ‘친일’에 대한 단죄가 우리의 소임이 아닌 이상 보다 복합적인 시각으로 당시의 정신사적 지형도를 파악하고 작가의 사유과정을 천착하는 것이 우리의 과제일 것이다. 이에 작품 자체가 맨 처음의 자리에 놓여야 함은 너무나도 분명한 일이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In 「Naeng Dong Uh」, Chae Man-Sik depicts an intellectual who confronts a grim and stifling situation. The intellectual, who can be interpreted as the author himself, is at first full of faith and leads a normal life, but eventually he is forced to choose a path of silent self-scrutiny based on a sense of emptiness because the world does not allow him to be idle anymore. The author uses the demand of the context as a safety device and hides what is necessary, while overtly revealing what is unnecessary. Through such methods he expresses his inescapable sense of emptiness. His disjunctive prose works, written in the similar period, can be understood as “revealing” pieces, and I believe if he had written more his sense of emptiness would have deepened. The way he creates an autobiographical protagonist to speak out his voice, which is an unprecedented attempt, can also be understood as “revealing as a way of concealing.”
It is only natural that he should create a completely different literary world from his literary world, since the times demand him to be alert to world historical crises. Therefore, it is not surprising that his disposition should seem rather disparate until he regains his satire after the liberation. However, since it is not up to us to judge pro-Japanese actions, we should probe the intellectual topography of the period in a more comprehensive manner to delve into the author's flow of thought. It is clear that the text itself should be of foremost importance in this task.
