This study was attempted to compare the costs, admission duration, and clinical status between the medically treated group and surgically treated group. We studied 15 cases of amebic liver abscess patients who were identified by the medical records of Kyung Hee University Hospital from 1979 to 1983. Of 15 cases, 10 patients were treated medically and operative drainage was carried out in 5 patients. The following results have been obtained; 1) Hospital days were 14.9 days in medically treated group, compared with 38.4 days in surgically treated group. 2) The costs were 851,000 Won in medically treated group, compared with 2,725,000 Won in surgically treated group. 3) Metronidazole treatment brought defevervescence in 70% within 3 days, and resolving of pain in 100% of the medically treated group. 4) Surgical intervention frequently leaded to more serious complications. Therefore, we concluded that early diagnosis, adequate medical treatment, and correct selection of patients for surgical intervention preoperatively were needed for prevention of unnescessary operation.
