Recent automakers is usually using reinforcing bracket to secure sufficient stiffness of side closure because vehicle side closure is only supported at hinge and latch points. If side closure itself doesn`t have sufficient stiffness, there is potential to cause many problems such as coming loose of bolt and vibration.
In this paper, an effective way is introduced to achieve mass reduction of side closure and to improve stiffness of side closure using the design of experiments and computer simulation. Based upon simulation results, a mass reduction of side closure is achieved without stiffness deterioration of side closure and we can get more optimized belt line reinforcement design.
