This essay explores the politics of Bakhtin’s carnival in terms of utopian populism. His concept of people opens its meaning as an ambivalent and indeterminate category. It is a whole which is undefined and continuously changing in the process of generation. The carnival moves as a subversive discourse. This subversiveness of carnival contributes to the production of transgressive discourses on the various levels. Bakhtin recognizes the omnipresence of language but never accepts a postmodern textualism. He adopts the concept of ambivalence and indeterminacy but never slides into the relativism of postmodern thought. This is his uniqueness. But his concept of people has some limits as the general populism. He defines the concept of people as ambivalent and incomplete and simultaneously only under the umbrella of subversiveness. But our question is that what gives it the privilege of the transgression.
