니체와 고대 피론주의 ‒니체의 관점주의와 아이네시데모스의 트로펜을 중심으로‒

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목표는 니체와 고대 피론주의와의 불가분의 관계를 구명하려는 것이다. 나는 단순히 양자의 유사성에 대한 확인을 넘어서, 고대 피론주의자들의 논변 이론이 어떤 점에서 니체의 인식론이라고 할 수 있는 ‘관점주의(perspectivism)’에 결정적인 영향을 미쳤는가를 구체적으로 추적하고자 한다. 니체는 서양 철학을 지배해 온 독단주의자들을 공격하고자 하였다. 그들이 얼마나 독단적인 병적 확신에 빠져 있는가를 폭로함으로써 니체는 영혼의 건강을 회복하고자 하였다. 그렇게 하기 위해 그는 고대 피론주의를 전면적으로 수용하였다. 니체의 관점주의는 고대 피론주의자들의 ‘논변형식들(tropen)’을 차용한 것이다. 초월적이며 영구불변하는 진리 발견을 공언해 왔던 온갖 종류의 독단주의자들을 내리치기 위해 그가 들었던 해머의 정체는 아이네시데모스의 트로펜이었다. 내가 볼 때, 고대 피론주의를 수용함으로써 니체는 자신에게 가해진 비판, 즉 그가 ‘자기 지시적 모순(self-referential inconsistency)’의 오류를 범했다는 혐의로부터 벗어날 수 있는 가능성을 얻는다. 이런 해명의 가능성은 좀처럼 다른 지적 경로를 통해서는 확보될 수 없는 것이다. 그렇다고 해서 니체가 수미일관하게 피론주의자로서 머물러 있었던 것은 아니다. 양자의 결별은 니체가 피론주의자의 공격에 노출된다는 것을 뜻하는 것이지만, 다른 한편으로는 니체가 열어젖힌 철학의 새로우면서도 도발적인 지평을 드러내는 계기가 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this paper is to clarify the inseparable relationship between Nietzsche’s philosophy and ancient scepticism, especially pyrrhonism. I try to not only confirm the similarity of the two but investigate specifically how the forms of argument of pyrrhonists, that is tropen, had a decisive influence on Nietzsche’s perspectivism. Nietzsche attempted to attack the dogmatists who had dominated Western philosophy. He wanted to restore the health of their soul by revealing their illness caused by dogmatic convictions. To do so, he accepted fully the arguments which pyrrhonists designed and employed. Nietzsche’s epistemology, namely perspectiveism, consists of the arguments of ancient pyrrhonsm. The hammer he chose to beat down all kinds of dogmatists professing to discover transcendent and permanent truth was the tropen of Aenesidemus. In my view, Nietzsche gains the possibility of solving the problem of self-referential inconsistency by accepting the rhetoric strategy pyrrhonists adopted to escape from the same contradiction. The way of such disentanglement could hardly be obtained through other intellectual channels. Nietzsche did not, however, consistently remain as a pyrrhonian sceptic. The separation of the two means that Nietzsche is exposed to attacks from the pyrrhonists, but on the other hand that he opens up a new but provocative horizon of the philosophy.
