In order to study the number and the status of patients who were referred for physio-therapy, all the cases were divided into 2 groups, one in Orthopedic and the other in Neurological group according to their disorders, and the frequency of utilization of therapeutic equipment were studied for those cases.
The conducted cases were selected with the patients who referred to the department of
Rehabilitation Medicine or the department of Physiotherapy for physical treatment from
January 3rd 1978 to June 30th 1978 of 4 medical centers located in Seoul area.
The results of this study are as follows:
1) The patients who were referred for Physiotherapy revealed that Orthopedic patients were 63.2% and the Neurological patients were 18.0%.
2) The frequency of utilization of equipment shows that 1,462 patients (86%) were treated with Hydrocollator pack in the Hydrotherapy equipment, 538 patients (46%) Ultrasound in the Electrotherapy equipment, 240 patients (22%) manipulated under Cervical and Pelvic traction in the Therapeutic exercise modalities.
3) There is no particular difference in equipment utilization for orthopedically and neurologically disordered groups. Therefore, the basic therapeutic devices such as Cervical and Pelvic traction, Pulley exercise unit, Shoulder wheel, Pendulum exerciser, Tilt table, Rotary wrist machine. Bicycle or Restorator, Ankle and Leg exerciser. Ultrasound, Faradic and Galvanic and Sinusoidal generator, Short-wave Diathermy, Infrared, Hydrocollator pack, Whirl-pool bath, Paraffin bath. Cold-pack unit, are necessary to establish for physiotherapy section in both Orthopedic and Neurological clinics.
