다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Recently, The Law of Determination of Medical Care for Life Prolongation was fully brought into effect and the law that allowed the choice of death with dignity by signing the Advance Directives was passed. Nonetheless, ethical problems surrounding the issue of euthanasia are diverse. Many issues such as hospice, public healthcare policy, medical service, interruption of therapy, euthanasia and the patient’s discretion regarding his/her death, definition of death, exist in terms of the life ethics.
With the above issues under consideration, the author will, 1) summarize and examine the definition and the history of euthanasia, 2) examine the issues of the life ethics raised in relation to euthanasia and, 3) examine euthanasia from the perspectives of the Catholic, Protestant, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Confucianism. Insight provided by the religious perspectives will help the deepening social sympathy on the understanding of human life in relation to the issue of euthanasia, instead of it being influenced by biological determinism and financial reasoning.
Each religious perspectives, with regards to euthanasia, views individual deaths organically in relation to human communities, and may provide a perception that looks at the human death from a more moral context. The author hopes that these perspectives will help in the formation of social solidarity that emphasizes human values in a higher degree in regards to the issue of euthanasia.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 한국에서는 연명의료결정법(The Law of Determination of Medical Care for Life Prolongation)이 전면 시행되었으며, ‘사전연명의료의향서’ (Advance Directives)를 작성하여 ‘존엄한 죽음’을 선택하는 법률이 통과된 바 있다. 그럼에도 안락사의 사안을 둘러싼 윤리적 문제들, 예를 들어, 호스피스와 공공의료정책, 의료서비스, 연명치료중단의 책임, 안락사와 죽음에 대한 환자의 결정권, 죽음의 정의 등 고려하여야 할 점들이 생명윤리의 차원에서 많이 있다.
필자는 위의 문제점들을 염두에 두고, 1) 영어권의 자료를 통하여 안락사의 역사와 정의를 간략하고 살펴보고, 2) 안락사의 사안과 연관되어 제기되는 생명윤리의 문제 그리고 3) 가톨릭, 개신교, 유대교, 불교, 힌두교, 이슬람교, 유교적 관점에서 안락사를 살펴본다. 그리고 결론으로, 안락사의 문제가 생물학적 결정론이나, 경제적 논리에 의하여 좌우되지 아니하고, 인간 생명에 대한 인식의 깊이를 더하는 종교적 관점의 의의에 대하여 간략하게 평가한다.
각 종교적 관점은 안락사의 사안에 대하여 개인의 죽음을 인간 공동체와 연관하여 유기적으로 보며 그리고 인간의 죽음 자체를 도덕적 맥락에서 보는 시각을 제공하기도 한다. 이러한 관점들이 안락사의 문제와 연관하여 인간의 가치를 좀 더 중시하는 사회적 공감대를 형성하는 데에 도움이 되기를 바란다.
