교육(education)과 향상(enhancement)의 차이에 관하여 = On difference between human education and human enhancement

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 인간의 교육이라는 고전적 담론과 인간의 향상이라는 현대적 담론이 갖는 논리 구조적 동형성과 상이성을 탐구하고, 그로부터 휴머니즘과 포스트휴머니즘이 공존하는 시대에 교육학이 지향하여야 할 바를 성찰하고 있다. 본고는 교육과 향상이 이원론적 인간론에 근거하여 인간의 개선을 추구한다는 유사성을 띠고는 있으나, 전자와 달리 향상은 인간 종(種)의 개량을 수단으로 한다는 결정적 차이를 보인다는 점을 지적한다. 그리고 이러한 향상의 논리가 이른바 자유주의 우생학과 깊은 연관을 갖는다는 데 착안하여, 우생학의 창시자인 골튼(F. Galton)의 우생학과 그 후신인 자유주의 우생학(N. Agar)의 기본적 발상을 비교하되, 그 유사성을 능력주의, 낙관주의 그리고 과학주의로 정리한다. 그러나 이 둘의 결정적 차이라 할 수 있는 자유주의 우생학이 주장하는 개인의 자유로운 선택이라는 가치가 자유 시장 경제 체제를 바탕으로 하는 자본주의 체제에서는 현실적으로 그 실현이 요원하다는 점을 지적하고 있다. 이어서 본고는 새로운 시대적 과제에 직면하여 교육학의 관점에서 어떠한 비판적 지성과 진지한 성찰로 대처하여야 할 지에 대한 몇 가지 제안을 담고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study investigates the structural similarity and difference between the discourses of traditional human education and contemporary human enhancement, aiming at a critical rethinking the essence of education and what it should look like in the bridging era of humanism and posthumanism. Education and enhancement have their similarity in the fact that they pursue the betterment of human being based on a dualistic anthropology. Critically different are they from each other in that the latter takes the instrument of mechanistic approach and genetic engineering with the purpose of biological betterment of human being. Considering the fact that this concept of enhancement has something to do with the liberal euthenics since N. Agar, we compare it with the traditional euthenics by F. Galton in terms of meritocratic attitude, optimistic view in human-making and betterment of humanity, and scienticism. There seem to be also a critical difference between the classical and contemporary euthenics that the liberal euthenics advocates strongly the respect for the individual freedom of choice in the euthenics market. We argue that this value of freedom of choice of every individual in the market of liberal euthenics is far from realization as we wishes due to the specific character of euthenics market and human desire which can be lightly distorted. in a unhealthy form of making a perfect self and having a perfect child. Based on it, we try to make a few suggestion from educational perspective how we should confront the new social tendency and how we can review critically this new challenge.
