토크빌의 ‘새로운 자유주의’ = Tocqueville’s “ New Kind of Liberalism”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

토크빌은 ‘분류’가 힘든 사상가이다. 그런 토크빌이 자신을 ‘새로운 종류의 자유주의자’로 불렀다. 그는 당시 프랑스 사회에서 도덕과 종교, 질서를 높이 숭상하는 ‘질서 옹호자’들과 자유와 법 앞에서의 평등을 더 중시하는 ‘더러운 민주주의자’들이 갈라져 싸우는 것을 크게 개탄했다. 이 모든 것들이 동시에 하나로 합쳐져야만 ‘위대함과 행복’이 가능하다고 믿었기 때문이다. 따라서 그는 도덕과 종교, 질서 그리고 자유와 평등이 ‘반드시 서로 연계되어야 한다’는 사실을 보여주는 것을 ‘이 시대가 해야 할 가장 아름다운 과업’으로 꼽았다. 토크빌은 ‘더러운 민주주의자’들이 자유를 폄훼하고, ‘질서 옹호자’들이 물질주의적 개인주의의 노예가 되고 있는 현실을 신랄하게 비판하며 ‘질서 속에 규율있는 자유’를 제창했다. 그 출발점은 인간의 ‘우연한 존재상황’을 뛰어넘는 위대한 정치에 대한 염원이었다. 토크빌의 정치사상은 절충주의의 한계를 벗어나지 못하고, 복고적 향수의 자취를 남기고 있다. 그러나 위대한 정치를 통해 물질주의적 개인주의를 넘어가고자 하는 그의 문제의식은 오늘 이 시점에서 더욱 새로울 수밖에 없다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Tocqueville wanted to be a “New Kind of Liberal” in a way of criticizing and taking distance himself from both the “dirty democrats” and the “friends of order.” These two groups, according to Tocqueville, respectively represented the leftist democrats and the rightist conservatives in the nineteenth-century France, or European society in general. Tocqueville believed that “morality, religion and order”, on the one hand, and “freedom and equality”, on the other hand, must be pursued at the same time, because they are key elements for the human greatness and happiness. Tocqueville argued that the “dirty democrats”and the “friends of order”committed fatal mistakes by looking down upon this manifest truth and, thus, opened the way to material individualism and petty pleasures. He emphasized the urgency of the revival of the “great politics” and advocated the “New Kind of Liberalism”as an antidote for the humane tragedy.
