평화의 감성과 개념의 은유적 이해

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The paper aims to understand the emotion and concept of peace through the analysis of its metaphors in Korean. We first observe that the emotion of peace is understood as ‘fluid in a container’ and ‘light’ like happiness, but the two emotions are markedly different in some major aspects. First, happiness is understood as ‘up,’ but peace as ‘down’. Second, peace is not only understood as ‘fluid in a container’ but also as a precious thing that one embraces in one’s heart collectively as well as individually. Third, happiness is an instant and powerful feeling, while peace is a gradual feeling of calmness as reflected by such metaphors as [PEACE IS A CALM RIVER], [PEACE IS A BUD], [PEACE IS A FLOWER] and [PEACE IS A MOTH]. At the same time, we find the emotion and state of peace ‘not everlasting’ and ‘fragile’ through the metaphor [PEACE IS FRAGILE GLASS]. The metaphors of [PEACE IS A WELCOMING GUEST], [PEACE IS A LOVER] and [PEACE IS A LIVING THING] confirm the fragility of the peace emotion and give us an important insight of how the feeling of peace occurs inside our heart. On the other hand, we argue that peace as a social condition or phenomenon should be understood as a long-term process of collective and combined efforts through such metaphors as [PEACE IS A BUILDING], [PEACE IS DESIGN WORK] and [PEACE IS AGRICULTURE], and it is to be earned rather than given as reflected in such a metaphor as [PEACE IS A VALUABLE ENTITY].
