A molten caustic leaching (MCL) was applied to the desulfurization of petroleum coke at 550℃. Reaction variables considered here were temperature, ratio of sodium hydroxide to coke (wt. 1.0∼5.0), reaction time (20∼60min), acid washing time (10∼40min) and acid concentration (0∼5N). A best desulfurization efficiency was obtained after 20 minutes of reaction time, at which the efficiency was above 98% and ash removal was slightly less than 90%.
