실러의 『미학편지』에서 ‘제3의 품성’의 문제 = A Study on the Problems of “The Third Character” in Friedrich Schiller’s Aesthetic Letters

We think that there are serious contradictions and discrepancies in Friedrich Schiller’s thoughts in Aesthetic Letters and that they are crucial to the understanding of the work itself and his overall ideas about aesthetics and morality. We especially think that the arguments about ‘the third character’ can be a good example of the contradictions running through Aesthetic Letters, which is the reason we choose this subject. To begin with, we show the political background of Schiller’s interest in the education of citizens’ character, especially his worries about the process of the French Revolution. And then we consider the two different arguments about the role and the status of ‘the third character’ in Aesthetic Letters. On the one hand, Schiller treats ‘the third character’ as belonging to the middle and transient stage in the way from the natural state to the moral state. On the other hand, he presents it as the ultimate goal of human history, representing the ideal of human totality which we have lost in the process of civilization. To explain these two different conceptions of ‘the third character’, we attend to Schiller’s ideas about beauty in the letters to Augustenburg in 1793, and also in Grace and Dignity (1793). We find that Schiller was developing two different ideas about the role and the status of beauty in 1793, and that he did not make explicit the difference or the relation of them. We think it is the reason of there ultimately being two different and contradictory conceptions of beauty and of ‘the third character’ in Aesthetic Letters, which made the work itself quite mysterious and ununderstandable. It also made many commentators skeptical about Schiller’s genuine ethical ideal. However, we think that Schiller consistently pursued the ideal of human totality and that the acquisition of reason and morality by way of aesthetic education constitutes a part of fulfilling that ideal.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우리는 실러의 『미학편지』를 관통하는 모순과 불일치의 문제가 존재한다고 보고, 그것을 이해하는 것이 『미학편지』뿐만 아니라 미와 도덕에 대한 실러의 사유 전반을 이해하는 데에 핵심적이라는 판단 하에 그 문제를 직접 다룬다. 특히 『미학편지』의 초반에 등장하는 ‘제3의 품성’에 대한 논의가 저작을 관통하는 모순과 불일치를 잘 보여주는 예라고 생각하여 이를 주제로 선택한다. 먼저 우리는 실러가 품성의 문제를 제기하는 배경과 이유를 살펴본다. 실러는 1793년 아우구스텐부르크 공작에게 보낸 편지에서 이 문제를 처음 제기했다. 그리고 1793년의 편지를 수정하여 출판한 『미학편지』에서 소위 ‘제3의 품성’이 두 가지 다른 방식으로, 즉 한편으로는 자연국가에서 도덕국가로의 이행을 위한 중간적 품성으로, 다른 한편으로는 총체적 품성으로서 인간의 궁극적 지향점으로 이해되고 있음을 살펴본다. 이어서 ‘제3의 품성’에 대한 서로 다른 이해를 설명하기 위해 다시 1793년 편지로 돌아가 거기에서 실러가 전개했던 미의 역할에 관한 생각을 검토한다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 우리는 1793년에 실러가 미와 도덕의 관계에 대해 초점이 다른 두 가지 생각을 발전시키고 있었다는 것, 그리고 이것이 서로 다른 미의 관념으로 이어지게 되었다는 것, 하지만 실러가 서로 다른 미의 관념들의 차이와 관계를 분명히 하지 않음으로써 『미학편지』에 치명적인 모순과 불일치의 문제를 초래했다는 것을 알게 된다, 『미학편지』에는 도덕과의 관계에서 서로 다른 지위를 갖는 미의 관념들이 정확하게 구분되지 않고 병존하고 있어서 그것을 매우 이해하기 힘든 텍스트로 만들고 있다. 이는 실러의 궁극적 입장에 대해 오해를 불러일으키기도 하지만, 우리는 실러가 일관되게 인간의 총체성을 지향하는 입장을 가지고 있었고, 그에 대한 반론의 증거로 종종 제시되는 ‘인간 발달의 3단계론’은 실러의 전체적 입장의 일부를 이루는 것이라고 본다.
