사진 예술의 해석적 국면 = An Interpretational aspect of photography

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

It has been overlooked that just as music is created through two stages: a score and a performance, photographic art also is an art that consists of two stages: a negative (or data) and a print (or a digital image). However, if we compare photography with music and note specifically the fact that photography is a two-stage art, it could be possible to illuminate a new artistic aspect of photography. Setting off from this idea, I argue that we should focus on the second stage of photography. The photographer’s ‘interpretation’ which engages in the second stage, can be a significant artistic aspect of photographic art in that it plays a role comparable to that of the musician in music.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

음악이 악보와 연주라는 두 단계로 이루어지는 예술이듯, 사진이 네거티브(혹은 데이터)와 프린트(혹은 디지털 이미지)라는 두 단계로 이루어지는 예술이라는 사실은 간과되곤 한다. 그러나 사진을 음악과 비교하여 사진이 두 단계 예술임에 주목한다면 사진의 새로운 예술적 국면을 발견할 수 있지 않을까? 나는 이러한 질문에서 출발하여, 사진 예술을 보다 잘 이해하기 위해서는 사진 형성의 두 단계 중 특히 두 번째 단계에 주목해야 한다고 주장한다. 두 번째 단계에서 개입하는 사진가의 ‘해석’은 음악에서 연주자의 해석과 유사한 역할을 함으로써 사진이 갖는 의미 있는 예술적 국면일 수 있다.
