‘근대’라는 과도기의 여성표상과 청년-나쓰메 소세키(夏目漱石)의 『산시로(三四郎)』와 염상섭의 『만세전』을 중심으로-

Modern woman keeps the tradition as it is, functions as gender etc. and they begin to show the various aspects of a transition period. First, the women represented by the two main characters growing up were that of the outdated type, women who were okay with the idea of just simply living regardless of their ambitions. The new woman living in cities symbolizes western culture pursuing new things, and they also represent utopia for the two main characters. Outwardly, the new woman may have changed splendidly, but they were just tied up in societal influences which disregarded the will of the individual. Eventually, such women lose their personality as a second-class citizen, and the two main characters who have to coexist with them are impatient for the recovery of their respective personalities. Accordingly, their fretfulness of personality was in the human central life. This thesis shows that the two main characters are able to recover identity with awareness of reality of 'egocentricity' with a motto of humanism from a separate self because of women.
