아리스토텔레스의 『시학』을 넘어 = 괴테의 『파우스트』에 나타나는 반(反)아리스토텔레스적 메타드라마

국문 초록 (Abstract)

괴테의 『파우스트』는 제1부와 제2부 사이에 차이가 크다. 본고는 아리스토텔레스 시학과의 대결, 그리고 바이마르 극장장으로서의 경험 등이 이러한 변화에 미친 영향을 살펴본다. 괴테와 아리스토텔레스 시학의 관계는 한편으로는 전유하고 다른 한편으로는 해체하는 형태로 나타난다. 제2부의 제3막인 〈헬레나 막〉에서는 3일치의 법칙을 과도하게 확대하면서 실험적 성격을 드러내기도 하고, 파우스트가 구원받는 종결 부분은 아리스토텔레스 시학의 카타르시스적 차원에서 해석되기도 한다. 극장장으로서의 경험이 반영되는 〈무대 위의 서막〉 같은 장면들은『파우스트』에 새롭게 첨가되는 메타드라마적 속성을 드러내면서 연극의 본질이란 무엇인지에 대한 성찰로 관객을 유도하는 기능을 가진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Part One and Part Two of Goethe’s Faust greatly differ in terms of theatrical aesthetics. This paper examines to what extent Goethe’s analysis of Aristotle’s Poetics and his experience as theatre director of the Weimar Court Theater have influenced his work. On the one hand Goethe assimilates the principles of Aristotle’s Poetics, but on the other seems to purposely deconstruct them. The excessive application of the three Aristotelian unities in the Helen Act (Part Two, Act 3) seem somewhat experimental and the salvation of Faust that closes the Faustian tragedy can be interpreted as a cathartic resolution. Scenes that reflect Goethe’s experience as theatre director, such as the Prologue in the Theatre, reveal the metadramatic character of the play and assume the function of guiding the audience as a reflection on the nature of modern theatre.
