연설문에 나타난 이명박 대통령과 George Bush 대통령의 리더십 비교연구 : 카리스마적 리더십을 중심으로 = A Comparative Study of Presidential Leadership of Lee Myung-bak and George Bush in their Speeches : Focusing on Charismatic Leadership

Many scholars argue that President Lee Myung-bak and President George Bush are the "CEO style leaders" with charismatic leadership. This study intends to find out the two presidents' charismatic leadership factors from their public speeches. It is expected that they have charismatic leadership in their management of countries because of their experience as CEO in the 1980s when corporations pursued innovation and reform based on CEO's charismatic leadership. This study has three goals: first, it will try to find out the charismatic leadership factors of the two presidents from their speeches based on the charismatic leadership model established by R. J. House; second, it will intend to find similarities and differences between the two presidents in their charismatic leadership and policy implementation; finally, this study will analyze the limits of the charismatic leadership and make some suggestions to compensate the limits. This study selects a total of eight public speeches, four from each president, and applying qualitative content analysis, it tries to see how the speeches match with the seven characteristics of House's charismatic leadership factors. The seven factors are confidence, positive image, vision for reform, persuasion power and risk management skill, role model, trust and expectation, and motivation.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

학자들은 이명박 대통령과 George Bush 대통령을 카리스마적 리더십을 발휘하는 CEO형 리더라고 한다. 본 연구의 목적은 두 대통령의 리더십 스타일이 카리스마적 리더십이란 가정 하에, 그들의 연설문에서 카리스마적 리더십의 요인들을 찾아내 보고자 한다. 1980년대 기업이 카리스마적 리더십을 토대로 혁신과 개혁을 추구했고, 그러한 시대적 배경에서 기업을 경영했던 두 대통령은 국가를 통솔하는 데에도 카리스마적 리더십이 여러 형태로 배어 있으리라 예상된다. 본 연구는 다음 세 가지의 목표를 가지고 있다. 첫째, 연설문을 이용하여 두 대통령을 하우스(R. J. House)의 카리스마적 리더십 이론에 맞추어 카리스마적 요소를 찾아내 보고, 둘째, 두 대통령은 카리스마적 리더십을 개인적으로 어떻게 발휘하는지 공통점과 차이점을 비교해 보며, 셋째, 카리스마적 리더십을 가진 대통령의 한계점과 보완해야 할 사항은 무엇이 있는지 방안을 제시해 보는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 두 CEO출신 대통령의 연설문을 각각 4개씩을 선택하였고, House의 이론을 토대로 7가지 카리스마적 행동특성을 연설문에서 찾아보고자 한다. House가 주장한 바에 의하면 ‘권력에 대한 강한 욕구가 있는 리더들은 다른 사람을 설득하는 능력이 탁월하다’고 한다. 질적 내용분석(Qualitative Content Analysis)을 통해서, 8개의 연설문 내용에서 House가 주장한 리더의 7가지 카리스마적 특성(자신감과 확신, 호의적 이미지 형성, 개혁을 위한 비전제시, 설득력과 위기대처능력, 역할모범제시, 구성원에 대한 신뢰와 기대, 동기유발)이 어느 정도 나타나는지 검토해 본다.
