소리 내어 읽기 연습의 영어 학습 효과에 관한 연구 메타분석 = A Meta-analysis of Studies on the Effectiveness of Oral Reading in Foreign Language Learning

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 소리 내어 읽기의 영어 학습 효과에 관한 연구들을 종합하여 그 효과의 범위와 정도를 보다 객관적으로 알아볼 목적으로 수행되었다. 국내외 학술자료 데이터베이스를 이용하여 메타분석의 요건을 충족한 논문들을 수집한 다음 국내 연구와 국외 연구, 실험집단과 통제집단 비교 연구, 사전․사후 비교 연구, 학습적 측면과 정의적 측면에의 효과로 구분하여 전체 효과크기를 제시하였다. 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 국내 집단 간 비교 연구에서는 학습적 측면 효과크기가 d = 0.65, 정의적 측면은 d = 0.77이었다. 국내 사전․사후 비교 연구에서는 학습적 측면 효과크기가 d = 1.13, 정의적 측면은 d = 0.55로 나타났다. 집단 간 비교 연구에서와는 달리 사전․사후 비교 연구의 경우 학습적 측면의 효과크기가 정의적 측면보다 더 높았다. 국외 집단 간 비교 연구에서는 학습적 측면의 효과크기는 d = 0.84, 정의적 측면은 d = 2.43이었으며, 사전․사후 비교 연구에서는 학습적 측면의 효과크기가 d = 1.37, 정의적 측면은 연구의 수가 부족하여 산출할 수 없었다. 이는 소리 내어 읽기가 영어 능력의 향상에 큰 영향을 미친다는 사실을 보여준다. 학습적 측면에서는 독해력, 읽기 유창성, 어휘 습득, 말하기 능력, 관용 표현 구사력, 발음 능력, 발화량 등에, 정의적 측면에서는 학습태도, 흥미, 동기, 자기효능감 등에 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 그러나 소리 내어 읽기를 단순하고 기계적인 연습으로 간주한 나머지 중장기적인 효과를 관찰한 연구가 거의 없었으며, 대다수 연구에서 소리 내어 읽기 활동이 다른 활동과 함께 실시되어 학습의 결과를 소리 내어 읽기의 고유한 효과로 보기 어려운 점도 관찰되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of oral reading in foreign language learning from a meta-analytic perspective. The extant quantitative studies concerning the topic were collected from domestic and international databases. They were divided into two types according to research methodology: group comparison studies and pre-post comparison studies. The effectiveness was evaluated with respect to linguistic achievement and affective enhancement. A total of 30 effect sizes from the group comparison studies and 79 from the pre-post comparison studies were entered into analysis. The mean effect sizes of domestic group comparison studies were d = .65 for linguistic achievement and d = .77 for affective enhancement, and those of pre-post comparison studies were d = 1.13 and d = .55, respectively. The international studies reported larger effect sizes: d = .84 for linguistic achievement and d = 2.43 for affective enhancement in the group comparison setting, and d = 1.37 for linguistic achievement in the pre-post comparison setting. These results confirm that oral reading provides a broad range of benefits to a highly reliable degree in foreign language learning.
