A Digital CDI(Capacitor Discharge Ignition) device is developed in this paper. This CDI. which has a micro-controller as its kernel. can have more flexible spark timing with engine speed than the conventional CDI used in most motorcycle engines owing to its programmable characteristics.<br/>
The principle of this digital CDI and the design of hardware and software are presented in this pater. Engine test with this CDI is carried out to optimize engine performance. Also comparison between conventional CDI and digital CDI is carried out.<br/>
The results shows that this digital CDI can provide a better spark timing than the conventional CDI. Tests of part load(30% throttling position) and full load(100% throttling position) show that the engine power is increased around 10-20% and fuel consumption is decreased around 10-20% simultaneously.<br/>
As this dinital CDI has simple structure, low cost and very little modification are required. It is a promising substitute for the widely used conventional CDI.<br/>
