데카르트(Rene Descartes)의 자연관: 그 형성배경과 공과 그리고 그 대안 = Descartes`s View of Nature: its Formative Background and Merits and Demerits, and its Alternatives

국문 초록 (Abstract)

데카르트는 기계론적 자연관의 소유자이다. 기계론적 자연관은 자연을 수량화 가능한 대상, 결정론적 인과율에 따르는 대상으로 인식한다. 그리고 기계론적 자연관은 인간이 기계를 관리, 지배, 제어할 수 있듯이 자연도 지배, 관리, 제어 가능하다고 본다. 이 자연관은 근대화 이전의 사회를 근대화하는 데 긍정적으로 기여를 해왔다. 자연은 수량화될 수 있고 결정론적 인과율에 따라 작동한다는 인식 하에 자연을 효율적이고 생산적으로 관리·지배하는 것이 근대화과정의 특징이었기 때문이다. 하지만 오늘날 기계론적 자연관은 많은 비판을 받는다. 환경 파괴의 한 요인으로 작용하고 있다는 이유에서다. 그렇다면 필자는 기계론적 자연관에 대한 이러한 비판은 과연 정당한가 하는 물음을 제기하고자 한다. 이 물음에 대한 답변을 모색하기 위해 필자는 데카르트의 기계론적 자연관의 실체와 이것이 대두하게 된 배경, 이것이 우리 사회에 끼친 긍정적 효과와 그 한계를 먼저 해명하고, 기계론적 자연관의 한계를 넘어설 수 있는 대안을 제시하는 데 주력하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Rene Descartes is the owner of the mechanistic view of nature. According to the mechanistic view of nature, nature is quantifiable and subject to deterministic causality. And according to the mechanistic view of nature, human beings can manage, dominate, and control nature, just as human beings can manage, dominate, and control machines. The mechanistic view of nature has contributed positively to the modernization of pre-modern society. The reason is that efficient and productive management and domination of nature was characteristic of the modernization process under the recognition that nature can be quantified and operates according to deterministic causality. Today, however the mechanistic view of nature is highly criticized. It is because it acts as a factor of environmental destruction. I would like to raise the question whether this criticism of the mechanistic view of nature is justified. In order to find answers to this question, I first elucidate the main contents of Descartes`s mechanistic view of nature and the background in which it emerged, its positive effects on our society and its limitations. And finally, I am focusing on suggesting alternatives to overcome the limitation of mechanistic view of nature.
