Recently in Korea, as other many countries, science curriculum in elementary school have been reexamined to give better improvement.
In this study, a pilot study on elementary science study (E,S,S,), that is programmed and developed in the United States with emphasis on creativity and the mode of inquiry of pupil, was Conducted in two classes of third grade at elementary school attached to Seoul Junior Teacher's College for seven months.
The two groups under survey were of same social and intellectual background and environment in average.
The controlled group continued to study science using the textbook edited by Government.
The experimental group studied six unit from ESS program.
At the end of the study, the two groups scientific abilities in three categories-interest, attitude, and scientific skill-were compared by means of interview and Laboratory work (Experiment).
In view of the results, the following conclusions were made:
Children who studied science with the ESS program.
1) took more interest in science than the controlled group.
2) made a significant advancement in their scientific skill.
3) experienced improved scientific atitude by learning science through inquiery.
4) gained as much fundamental scientific knoweledge as the controlled group which studied the tradi tional curriculum.
