본 연구의 목적은 TMT의 다양성이 기업의 국제적 제휴에 미치는 효과에 대해서 분석하는 것이다. 일반적으로 TMT의 다양성이 기업의 국제적 제휴에 긍정적인 효과를 미치나, 과도한 수준의 TMT 다양성은 오히려 부정적인 효과를 초래할수 있다고 주장하였다. 또한, 환경의 불확실성이 높아질수록 TMT의 다양성이 기업의 국제적 제휴에 미치는 효과가 강화될 것이라고 주장하였다. 1988년부터 1996년까지 14개 산업에 속한 263개 미국기업을 대상으로 실증분석한 결과, TMT의 해외경험 다양성이 국제적 제휴에 미치는 효과는 지지되었으나 TMT의 직무관련 다양성이 국제적 제휴에 미치는 효과는 지지되지 않았다. TMT의 해외경험 다양성과 국제적 제휴간에는 역U자형의 관계가 유의하게 나왔지만, TMT의 직무관련 다양성과 국제적 제휴간에는 역U자형의 관계가 유의하지 않은 것으로 나왔다. 그리고, 환경불확실성이 TMT의 다양성과 국제적 제휴간의 관계를 조절하는 것으로 나왔다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 시사점과 향후 연구방향에 대해서 토의하였다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of TMT diversity on the use of international strategic alliances. We propose that while the moderate level of TMT diversity has a positive effect on the use of international alliances, excessive amount of TMT diversity has a negative effect. We also propose that the relationship between TMT diversity and the use of international alliances is stronger when the environment is more uncertain. Based on a sample of 263 US firms in fourteen industries from 1988 to 1996, we find that TMT international exposure diversity is positively associated with the use of international alliances whereas TMT job-related diversity has no significant association with it. We also find that TMT international exposure diversity has a curvilinear effect on the use of international alliances whereas TMT job-related diversity has no such effect. We further find that environmental uncertainty moderates the relationship between TMT diversity and the use of international alliances. We discuss implications and directions for future study.
