농인의 영어습득 경험에 관한 연구 = A Study on the English Acquiring Experience of the Deaf

Purpose: In the current scenario, where proficiency in English is imperative for education and employment, this study aimed to provide foundational data for the development of English curriculum and programs tailored to the Deaf community. This was achieved by exploring the unique learning experiences of the Deaf in acquiring English. Method: This study involved selecting five severly Deaf research participants (four in their 30s and one in their 40s) who had experience in learning English. In-depth interviews were conducted using phenomenological research methods, and the data was subsequently analyzed using the Giorgi method. Results: Through qualitative research methods, the study identified 69 central meanings, 15 distinct themes and revealed 5 essential themes. Firstly, ‘Living in a world without sound.’ Secondly, ‘English as a distant tale.’ Thirdly, ‘Initiating journey for English’ Fourthly, ‘Embracing the thrill of English progress.’ Lastly, ‘Pursuit of excellence in English.’ Implications: To enhance opportunities for the Deaf community, specialized English educators and sign language interpreters should be trained. Furthermore, Visual English teaching materials should be developed, and Korean language education should be fortified. By expanding social welfare services, individuals who are Deaf can unlock their potential and experience a heightened sense of accomplishment through information acquiring and English proficiency. This empowerment will enable the Deaf to showcase their multifaceted abilities more effectively.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연구목적: 영어가 진로와 취업 과정의 필수가 된 현실에서 농인의 영어습득 경험의 본질을 탐색하여 농인을 위한 영어교육 과정 개발 및 지원방안 마련을 위한 기초자료를 제공하는 것이다.
연구방법: 영어습득 경험이 있는 농인 참여자 5명을 (30대 4명, 40대 1명) 대상으로 현상학적 연구방법을 활용해 심층 면담을 진행하고 지오르기의 방법으로 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과: 분석과정을 통해 69개의 중심 의미, 15개의 드러난 주제, 5개의 본질적 주제를 도출하였다. 본질적 주제는 첫째, ‘소리 없는 세상에서 살기’, 둘째, ‘영어는 먼 나라 이야기’, 셋째, ‘그럼에도, 영어를 향해 시동 걸기’, 넷째, ‘영어 레벨업의 즐거움을 맛봄’, 다섯째, ‘영어 공든 탑 사수하기’이다. 시사점: 영어교육이 가능하도록 훈련된 농인 전문 특수교사와 수어통역사 양성, 시각적 영어교재 개발, 한국어 교육 강화, 사회복지 서비스 확대가 이루어진다면 농인도 영어를 통한 정보습득과 성취감 향상을 통해 잠재력과 역량을 더 발휘할 수 있게 될 것이다.
