『일본왕환일기(日本往還日記)』의 사행문학적 성격 연구 = A Study on Characteristics and Significance of Envoy`s Travel Literature, 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi(日本往還日記)』

This is a study of 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi(日本往還日記)』, a record of envoy`s visit, which is recorded after diplomatic mission on 1596 by director of the visit Hwangshin. His visit was different from other envoy`s visit, which result on distintion of the 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi』. Here is the summary of this study. First of all, to discover the background of a creation of 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi』, it was needed to see Hwangshin`s literary attainments and diplomatic ability. This helped to discover the unique literary achievements. In the 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi』, there is an exhaustive record which is based on objective point of view. Mostly it is described according to the order of ``date-weather-track``. Even though there is no change in a course, he recorded the date and weather, which shows his will to report. His blurred position as a envoy and vassal, and unclear cause made him feel embarrassed. So he couldn`t help doing self-justification by careful recording. This made the 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi』 show reproduction technique and biographical method. In the record of Hwangshin, there is two aspects of description. One is reportage character, and the other is that a personal feeling was written in the record by literature. Hwangshin put himself in observer for objective description. It means, as a director of the envoy`s visit, he used objectification strategy to report the experiences without making any adjustments. This will to report show up across all the records. 「Seohaemun」 and 「Chupojip」 include four poems about envoy`s visit and they have Hwangshin`s personal feeling toward the visit. The poems cover missing for home, and they express anguish and conflict of a director. Also they contain the will to overcome trials against positional difficulties, and it is found in 「Seohaemun」, which is written on the way to Daemado. There are two features of content in Hwangshin`s record. First, he shows a ambivalence attitude toward Japan. Actually, intelligentsia in the early period of the Joseon Dynasty didn`t have hostility against Japan. In 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi』, in spite of Toyotomi Hideyoshi`s inhospitable treatment, there is signs of effort to see the Japanese culture with an objective point of view. Second, there is his diplomatic conflict and anguish as a director of the visit. As Toyotomi Hideyoshi refused to meet Tonshinsa, he felt diplomatic tension. In the strained relations, he revealed the will to perform the work assigned to him. And he expressed the will even unto death, in case of failure. But such attitude created a conflict between Hwangshin and envoies of Ming Dynasty. This story was reflected in 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi』 faithfully, and made it have both literary value and value of history of diplomacy. Lastly, based on the study above, historical meaning of Hwangshin`s literature is studied. First, there are unique features of 1596 envoy`s visit in his literature. Before his visit, envoy`s visit was focused on a relationship between the Joseon Dynasty and Japan. On the other hand, envoy`s visit on 1596 covers relationships between the Ming Dynasty and the Joseon Dynasty and Japan. So there are more complex diplomatic conflicts in the 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi』. Second, Hwangshin`s 『Ilbonwanghwanilgi』 shows different aspects of perception toward Japan. It provided a wider perspective for noblemen of the day. Also, it can be an important material to see the changes of perception toward Japan. This study covers the backgrounds of creation, strategies of description, and features of content to establish the status of record of the envoy`s visit. The ultimate goal of this study is making the envoy`s visit on 1596, which was neglected until now, the full-scale research theme.
