도시의 산업 특성과 고용 성과

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 우리나라 도시의 고용 증가를 도시의 산업과 지역 특성과의 관련성하에서 분석하였다. 도시화는 지식의 외부성을 창출함으로써 성장을 촉진하고 고용을 창출한다. 지식의 외부성은 도시 산업의 특화, 도시 산업의 다양성, 도시에서의 산업간 경쟁과 독점의 구조 등의 영향을 받는다. 이러한 요인들이 우리나라의 2000∼2006년간 도시의 고용 성장을 어떻게 설명하는지를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과 도시로의 특정 산업이 집중되기보다는 도시에 다양한 산업이 고르게 분포되어 있는 경우 그리고 도시-산업의 시장환경이 좀 더 경쟁적인 경우 고용증가율이 큰 것으로 분석되었다. 도시의 규모가 주는 이점은 고용창출에 긍정적으로 기여하는 반면, 도시로의 특정 산업의 과도한 집적은 새로운 기업의 창업을 통한 고용창출에도 긍정적으로 기여하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper seeks to see the causes of employment growth in cities in terms of industrial characteristics of cities. Urbanization spurs growth in economy and employment by creating knowledge spill-overs. The knowledge spill-overs are affected by industrial specialization, diversification, and the degree of market competition of cities. The localization and urbanization externalities also affect the growth of cities. These hypotheses were tested for the Korean 165 cities between year 2000 to 2006. The analyses results show that the diversification of industries of cities rather than agglomeration of a few industries has positive effects on employment growth in cities and the competitive market conditions raises the employment growth rates. The urbanization externalities also have merits in spurring employment growth of cities whiles there are not localisation externalities of creating new establishments in cities.
