The EPDM-ionomer was prepared by sulfonation of EPDM and adding metal acetate. The sulfonation conversion of EPDM was investigated with the change of [A_(C_2)O][H_2SO_4], time, temperature. The optimum reaction condition for EPDM sulfonation was [A_(C_2)O][H_2SO_4] = 2.5, time>=30 min., temperatures<=20 ℃, and the maximum conversion was 67% of ENB in EPDM; 3.168× 10 exp (-4) mole/ℓ·g of polymer.
In addition, the thermal behavior of PP/EPDM-ionomer blends was studied. The melting enthalpy of PP/ionomer blends was higher than that of PP/EPDM blends but the melting point of PP/ionomer blends was lower than that of PP/EPDM blends for the same amount of EPDM or ionomer.
The crystallization half time and the crystllization temperature of PP/ionomer blends were shorter and higher than original polypropylene. Since polypropylene was incompatible with EPDM, we observed that EPDM acted as nucleating agent, but for PP/ionomer blends, the effect as nucleating agent decreased because of the phase separation between polypropylene and ionomer. And the crystallization enthalpy of PP/ionomer blends was higher than that of PP/EPDM blends.
