동시대 예술에서 보이는 (비)물질성과 재물질화에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 1985년 퐁피두센터에서 열린 《비물질(Les Immatériaux)》 전시와 이후 비물질과 재물질 예술에 대해 다룬 최근 전시 《비물질/재물질: 컴퓨팅 아트의 역사 요약(Immaterial/Re-material: A Brief History of Computing Art)》(2020-2021)을 분석하여 동시대 예술에서 보이는 물질과 비물질에 대한 특징을 발견하고자 한다. 그리고 이를 통해 물질과 비물질의 구분을 넘어 재물질화를 이룬 예술을 새로운 물질적 전환의 측면에서 해석할 수 있는지 그 가능성을 탐구해 보고자 한다. 《비물질》 전시는 비물질의 근원은 물질이라는 것을 증명하고자, 텔레커뮤니케이션의 기술과 같은 새로운 물질성에 대한 인식뿐만이 아니라 그 물질의 주인이 되려는 인간과 그의 욕망 사이의 관계를 파악해 보고자 하였다. 또한 《비물질/재물질》 전시에서는 시각 예술에서 물질적 형태로 존재하는 것의 기원을 비물질 정보를 통해 해석해보고자‘ 비물질’이 표현되는 과정을‘ 재물질화’라는 단어를 사용하여 설명하였다. 이러한 (비)물질성에 대해 좀 더 자세히 분석해보기 위해 본 논문에서는 케이시 리아스(Casey Reas, 1972~) 작업을 분석하여 컴퓨팅 아트에서 다루는 비물질성이 어떻게 물질적 형식으로 재물질화 되는지를 살펴본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study analyzes the exhibition Les Immatériaux , held at the Pompidou Center in 1985, and the recent exhibition Immaterial/Re-material: A Brief History of Computing Art (2020-2021), dealing with immaterial and material art. The study explores whether we can interpret rematerialized art beyond the usual distinction of material vs. immaterial, but rather in terms of a new material transformation. Les Immatériaux tried not only to recognize the new materiality, like telecommunication technology, but also to understand the relationship between humans and their desire to become masters of material in order to prove that a material originates from an immaterial. The later exhibition Immaterial/Re-material: A Brief History of Computing Art adopted the word “re-material” to describe the process of expressing the “immaterial” in order to interpret the origin of what exists in material form in visual art through immaterial information. In order to make a more in-depth analysis of this (im)materiality, this paper analyzes the work of Casey Reas(1972~) to explore how the immateriality used in computing art is rematerialized into material form.
