The main goal of this paper is to examine the theme of 《The Possessed》of F. M. Dostoevsky on the basis of its structural unity. The unique structure of this long novel can be viewed as concentric circles on which the main character. Stavrogin, has a distorted influencing power on the rest characters of this novel. The ideological centrifugal forces, which Kirillov, Shatov and Pyotr have developed from Stavrogin, make problems for themselves. because Stavrogin has no balancing centripetal force which can control and guide them. That is, Stavrogin, who has already given his former ideologies up and resumes an attitude of indifference to life, has no sound centripetal force which they can expect from them.
Such a structure of distorted concentric circles can also be applied to nearly all the relations between Stavrogin and the rest of the characters. The reason on which they feel mysterious attractions from Stavrogin is that they can recklessly and impulsively be attracted to any influence from outer world. without having their own fundamental view of life. Stavrogin, who sought ideologies which can only satisfy his own pride, is himself a symbol of such a world, where there is no truthful attitude to beliefs. Dostoevsky fulfills the unified structure of distorted concentric circles of this novel by the use of disoriented narrator and various kinds of techniques and symbolization.
On the last pages of this novel we can see the image of Russia itself as a remedy which can cure the hollow spiritual state of people who lost the reliable centripetal force. The spiritual freedom of men. to which Russia and its god give fundamental importance, is regarded by Dostoevsky as a reliable centripetal force, because that supplies men at the same time with sound centrifugal force and thus enables them to get much more dynamic and truthful ideologies than the european rationality which represses the truth of men.
