      로스쿨 출신 법률가, 그들은 누구인가? -사법연수원 출신 법률가와의 비교를 중심으로- = Law School Lawyers in Korea, Who Are They?

      This paper analyzes the results of a comprehensive survey on the Korean legal profession which was conducted in 2014. About 1,020 responses from lawyers in active legal practice were collected through a random sampling out of 18,000 lawyers in Korea. In order to illustrate the changing aspects of the Korean legal landscape due to the introduction of the new law school system which was established in 2009, three lawyer groups were compared: (1) the graduates of the new law school who entered the law school since 2009 (“law school group”), (2) the graduates of the Judicial Research and Training Institute (JRTI) who entered the JRTI since 2009 (“JRTI group”), and (3) the graduates of the Judicial Research and Training Institute who entered the JRTI prior to 2009 (“career lawyer group”). The survey examined whether there are qualitative differences between the law school group and the JRTI group in terms of demographic compositions and background. It also addressed the law school group and the JRTI group lawyers` assessment of their respective educational institutions, as well as their outlook for the opening of the Korean legal market since 2011. Finally, it investigated how the career lawyer group assessed the performance of the other two groups. No statistical difference was found between the law school group and the JRTI group in terms of the gender ratio and age. On the other hand, the law school group was more diverse than the JRTI group with regard to the university attended, the undergraduate major, and the work experience. No difference was found between the two groups on the household income, the profession and educational level of the parents. However, both groups` socio-economic backgrounds were consistently higher than those of the career lawyer group. The overall satisfaction level about the law school was high among the law school group, and their evaluation of the curriculum and the coursework were positive. However the JRTI group assessed more positively than the law school group about the education related to practical skills. The results suggest that the professional responsibility as well as the character education need to be strengthened in law school. In general, the career lawyers evaluated the JRTI group more highly than the law school group. However, this result needs to be cautiously interpreted because the evaluation differs significantly based on the evaluators` age and their status within the employment and on the ‘social distance’ between the evaluator and those who are evaluated.
